It is tough to effectively gauge prospects at this level, but I must admit that I enjoy seeing Moustakas’ bat coming around a bit. He has been up and down all year, but it seems that he is not overmatched as his K rate is not extraordinarily high (36 in 55 games). His ’07 Bowman Chrome Draft RC’s can be purchased for under $3, which seems like a good deal for a player whose swing was likened to Alex Rodriguez’s.
Ben Revere has been as hot as any hitter in the minor leagues this season yet his chrome autos can be purchased for $12-15 each. This seems low for someone who, at a young age, is hitting well over .400 by June. The lack of power seems to always turn prospectors off, but make no mistake, Revere is an impact player who can do quite a bit at the top of the order. I expect that he will find himself in Fort Myers within a month barring any major slumps. Revere’s game has a Jacoby Ellsbury feel to it as he wreaks havoc at the top of the order and plays great defense. I would definitely have an auto or 10 in your collection!
Scott Mitchinson is a lanky Aussie in the Phillies system who has RC’s in several of the 2005 Topps brands. Mitchinson has been dominant and, with the A’s acquiring him from the Phillies this off-season, it can be well expected that Mitchinson has some good stuff. This is a guy that is completely off of the radar with 99.9% of the prospecting market. The best bets are to purchase low #’ed serial cards in Topps Chrome Update, Bowman Chrome, and Autos in Bowman’s Best. One caveat is that he is 23 years old and is at Low-A. Additionally, the glut of pitching within the A’s farm system will make it difficult for Mitchinson to distinquish himself as an elite prospect. I don’t know at this point if his future lies in starting or closing, but it is apparent that he is behind the likes of Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson, Henry Rodriguez, Fautino de los Santos, and Craig Italiano on Oakland’s Farm Depth Chart. Regardless, this is a low cost speculative opportunity if you are willing to wait a couple of years.
Yawn….That is enough for tonight. Please feel free to add your Low-A contributions to this thread.
