4/23 Low-A Minor League Report
Wow! Lots to report here.
Blue Jays young slugger Johermyn Chavez continues to wow with his fourth HR of the season. Brewers OF prospects and ‘08 draftees Cutter Dykstra and Brett Lawrie took turns having big games for West Virginia and Anthony Gose doubled twice, scored twice and stole his tenth base of the year. On the mound, Ethan Martin continues to look dominant, allowing just three hits and striking out seven in five innings for his third win and Jeffrey Kaplan also tossed five shutout innings and punched out eight for his first win.
Today’s honors go to Mauricio Robles for his one hit allowed over seven innings for his second win of the season. Robles is an undersized southpaw who just celebrated his 20th birthday and has accrued 26 strikeouts in his first 16 innings this season. He features a 91-93 MPH heater that can touch 95 at times and has great late movement (especially against lefties). His curveball and change show considerable promise as well, though they remain works in progress. Last season, Robles pitched for Western Michigan and limited hitters to a .176 BA as he went 5-3 with a 2.66 ERA and had a 54 BB/79 K ratio in 91.1 IP. While he struggled with it last season, he seems to have harnessed his command and may earn a promotion at some point this season. He doesn’t have a first year card available right now, but could debut at some point in 2009.
