5/29 High-A Minor League Report

Angel Villalona and Nick Noonan each went yard for San Jose.  Villalona has made great strides offensively this season raising his average nearly 40 points over last year’s totals and improving his BB/K ratio slightly.  There is still an ample amount of work that needs to be done in this department as he has only earned 7 BB vs. 38 K’s in his 45 games, but it is an improvement over last year’s 18 BB/118 K debacle.  In other action, Neftali Soto rapped four hits and drove in a run, a feat exceeded by Boston’s catching prospect Luis Exposito who also went 4-4 with his 3rd HR and three RBI.

Michael Stanton raised his average to .296 by collecting three hits, including his 11th HR, driving in three runs and scoring four times.  Stanton’s plate discipline has improved by leaps and bounds as he has a very respectible 25 BB/37 K’s thusfar.  Adding that element to his game makes him infinitely more dangerous as a power hitter.

Today’s top prospect is another Philadelphia Phillie, Kyle Drabek.  The fireballing son of former N.L. Cy Young Award winner Doug Drabek, tossed a complete game shutout, allowing five hits and striking out seven.  The win gives Drabek a 4-1 record this season with a 2.48 ERA and 19 BB/74 K in his first 62 innings.  Going at least 5 innings in each of his first 10 outings, the 21 year old is showing that he has moved well beyond his injury woes of the past and previous concerns about his makeup and work ethic have been mitigated significantly.  Expect Drabek to get a promotion at some point this season and, with the poor pitching of top prospect Carlos Carrasco, it seems reasonable to expect that Kyle could wind up as Philly’s best young hurler by the end of the ‘09 season.

5/29 AA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

If you like offense, and oh how us prospectors do, then the AA performances from yesterday will bring a smile to your face.  Cleveland’s 1B prospect Beau Mills blasted two HR and drove in four runs yesterday, while Detroit farmhands Scott Sizemore and Brennan Boesch each hit their 9th HR’s of the young season.  Desmond Jennings rapped three hits including his 6th dinger and Angels 1B prospect Mark Trumbo also hit his 6th while driving in four runs.  San Diego Padres OF prospect Mike Baxter added four more hits, including his 3rd HR and 21st double en route to a 3 RBI day.  Baxter now has 21 hits over his last 10 games (.538 BA) with 13 RBI and 12 runs scored.  Baxter’s effort helped elite pitching prospect Mat Latos earn his 1st AA win, though he probably didn’t need the help.  Latos allowed just one hit over seven scoreless innings, walking two and striking out seven.  Latos is now 4-0 on the year and has allowed a stingy .059 BA since his promotion to San Antonio.

Today’s top prospect is Philadelphia Phillies OF Michael Taylor.  The former Stanford slugger has been swinging a hot bat as of late, hitting .432 with 3 HR and 13 RBI over his last 10 games.  Taylor’s day yesterday was probably his best outing of the season, as he went 5-6 with his 9th HR, six RBI and two runs scored.  Taylor is a mythical blend of power, speed, and discipline that should make him the perfect offensive weapon at the next level.  So far this season, the 6-6 250 lb. Taylor is batting .342 with 9 HR 37 RBI and 8 SB.  He should earn a promotion to AAA soon with an outside shot of making his MLB debut in ‘09.  There really is no rush Taylor along as the OF is pretty well set right now with the trifecta of Ibanez, Victorino, and Werth.  As good as things right now in the green grasse of Citizen’s Bank Ballpark, the rapid development of Taylor and top prospect Dominic Brown promises an even rosier future.

AA Player of the Day—MICHAEL TAYLOR

5/29 AAA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

Sorry about the brief hiatus from the daily reports.  As the school year ends, my son has tons of school related activities that I get to take part in, which leads me away from the computer.  Also, I have written an article for the Cardboard Connection covering 10 much anticipated MLB debuts that we as baseball fans and card collectors can look forward to.  It has not yet been posted on the site, but when it is, I will provide a link to it.

On the the AAA docket.  Gordon Beckham rapped his first two hits as a AAA player.  Ever since Chicago served notice to Josh Fields and Chris Getz that their jobs were in jeopardy, the production from each of them has picked up significantly.  Don’t expect this to hold true for a prolonged period, though, Beckham will eventually supplant one of them.

In other games, Matt Joyce hit his 5th dinger at Durham and career minor league slugger Joe Koshansky blasted his 10th.  Jesus Guzman’s tenure with the Giants during their interleague stretch was brief and unproductive, but he has gone right back to tatooing the ball at Fresno, hitting his 7th HR, driving in three and scoring twice.

Today’s top performer was Colorado Rockies 2B prospect Eric Young Jr.  The 24 year old speedster went 4-5 with a double three runs scored an RBI and his league-leading 28th SB.  Young put together a memorable Arizona Fall League performance this past winter by hitting .430 with 5 HR 20 RBI and 37 runs scored in just 31 games.  Additionally, Young was 20 for 21 in SB attempts and earned a respectible 12 BB/14 K ratio.  While he has not be as impressive at AAA Colorado Springs, he has still shown that he is a viable top of the order candidate for a struggling Rockies franchise.  Through the first two months of the season, Young has hit .291 with a HR 15 RBI 41 runs scored and 28 SB in 34 chances.  It would be nice to see him produce some of the same promising power numbers that he put up in Arizona.  Defensively, Young is still a bit rough around the edges.  He has poor footwork at times and is a more natural fit for the outfield.  However, his best opportunities in Colorado will happen if he can stick at 2B, as the Rockies are quite loaded with talented young outfielders.  Currently, Clint Barmes has garnered a major share of the playing time at 2B, but his diminuative production, coupled with Colorado’s profound struggles this season, could pave the way for Young to earn an opportunity at some point this summer.

AAA Player of the Day—ERIC YOUNG JR.

5/27 High-A Minor League Report

Similar to the AA docket of games, the High-A slate is a bit light as rainouts plauged much of the Florida State League and the California League had the night off. Jason Heyward rapped three hits and drove in three runs, raising his season average to .295.  Baseball’s top outfield prospect has been exceptional over his last 10 games, hitting .359 with 3 HR 8 RBI and 9 runs scored.  Top minor league lefties Brian Matusz of the Orioles and K.C.’s Danny Duffy locked horns in a pitchers duel as each went six-plus scoreless innings, striking out five hitters each.

Today’s top High-A player is Chicago’s 1B/OF prospect Christian Marrero.  The brother of Nationals slugger Chris Marrero went 4-4 with his 4th HR and three RBI.  Marrero is said to have considerably less potential than his younger brother, but he has outperformed him so far this season, hitting .333 with 4 HR 23 RBI and 13 doubles in 44 games.  Marrero has a sweet lefthanded swing that should hit for a high average and 12-15 HR power at the major league level.

5/27 AA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

With the Texas League taking the day off, yesterday’s AA slate of games was somewhat light.  Jordan Danks hit his 2nd HR of the year and scored twice while teammate John Shelby Jr. enjoyed a nice day at the plate hitting his 4th dinger and driving in three runs.  Tampa Bay’s Desmond Jennings hit his 5th HR as did lesser known Red Sox 1B prospect Aaron Bates.

Yesterday’s top performer is New York Yankees RHP Zach McAllister.  The 21 year old tosses seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out five.  After a highly successful 2008, McAllister continues to shine in the AA ranks going 3-2 with a 1.91 ERA and 15 BB/32 K in his first 47 innings.  McAllister has a solid fastball that ranges from 91-94 MPH and he also mixes in a 89-91 MPH two seamer that has nasty sink to it.  Offspeed pitches include a solid slider and changeup that he commands well in the strike zone.  Despite his frontline starter size and velocity, McAllister pitches to contact and looks to induce ground ball outs.  I can’t help but think that he has some projection left in that frame that could add some power and velocity to his stuff.  McAllister should pitch the majority of the season at AA before earning a mid to late summer promotion to AAA.

5/27 AAA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

Tommy Hanson’s MLB debut comes closer with each dominant start he has.  Yesterday, the big righthander surrendered just one run on five hits over seven innings while striking out nine hitters.  He also helped himself at the plate with a single and run scored in two AB’s.  Hanson received a no-decision for his efforts, but has assuredly reiterated to the Braves that he is quite ready to make his major league debut.

In other action, Jeff Clement had two more hits, scoring three times and driving in three runs.  He has been red hot during the month of May, hitting .360 with 3 HR 21 RBI 11 doubles and 17 runs scored.  Clement was curiously passed over for a big league promotion after Kenji Johjima’s hamstring injury in favor of the much less potent Guillermo Quiroz.  This leads me to believe that Clement’s days as a catcher, at least within the M’s organization, is coming to a close.  Watching him extensively last season, I completely agree with the move.

Today’s top prospect is another catcher, in fact it is the top catching prospect in all of baseball, Matt Wieters.  Shortly after receiving word that he would be making his MLB debut on Friday May 30th, Wieters went 4-4 with a double and four RBI.  The month of May has been good to the 23 year old Georgia Tech alum as he has hit .330 with 4 HR 25 RBI and 20 runs scored in 25 games.  During the first two months of the season, there hasn’t been many distinguishable performances from the ‘09 AL rookie class.  Wieters has an ample opportunity to step in and fulfill the expectations of many baseball prognositcators that predicted that his switch hitting power bat and Gold Glove defensive abilities would propel him to this year’s ROY award.

5/25 High-A Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on May 26, 2009 under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

The California League was the only active High-A affiliates yesterday, making this report a brief one.  The trifecta of San Francisco Giants prospects, Buster Posey (3-4 2B RBI), Angel Villalona (2-4 2B R), and Thomas Neal (2-4 HR(7) 3 RBI 2R) all had nice days yesterday as did Seattle Mariners catching prospect Travis Scott, who hit his 8th HR.  Astros OF, Jon Gaston hit his 11th dinger and Padres youngster Yefri Carvajal hit his 4th.  On the mound, Rangers youngster Kennil Gomez struck out nine in seven innings for his 2nd win, while Jeremy McBride tossed seven innings with seven K’s for his 5th win.

Yesterday’s top California League performance came from L.A Dodgers 3B prospect Pedro Baez.  The 21 year old slugger hit his 7th and 8th HR of the season, driving in three runs.  Baez has 25 RBI in May, but the strikeouts are still a concern.  In 32 games, Baez has walked 9 times and struck out 34 times.  There is a lot to like about Baez from a physical standpoint.  At 6-3 and 200 lb., Baez has enormous power potential that projects to increase as his body matures.  He has a cannon arm and has the potential to be a plus defender at the hot corner in the mold of former Dodgers prospect Adrian Beltre.  Pitch recognition and establishing a more consistent approach at the plate will be key for his success moving forward.  Keep an eye on these developments as he continues to play at Inland Empire.

5/25 AA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on under Minor League Ball today | 4 Comments to Read

Cincinnati Reds 3B prospect Juan Francisco blasted HR’s 8 and 9 yesterday while his teammate Zack Cozart hit his second.  Lars Anderson went yard for the 6th time and Philly’s Michael Taylor hit his 8th, helping teammate Joe Savery earn his 4th win of the year.

Yesterday was a big day for Birmingham’s top sluggers as Tyler Flowers hit his 6th HR, Dayan Viciedo had four hits and an RBI, and Brandon Allen had three hits.  It was ‘08 1st rounder Gordon Beckham who took home top honors, however, as he went 3-5 with his 4th HR five RBI and two runs scored.  Beckham raised his average to .307 and his 17 doubles indicate that there is a good chance that he will boost his power numbers in the not too distant future.  The White Sox currently are set at SS with Alexei Ramirez and rookie Chris Getz has been decent at 2B.  Beckham’s star is rising, however, and there is no chance that Getz will be able to hold him off once the White Sox deem him ready for a major league job.  Odds are quite high that Beckham will receive a mid-summer promotion to AAA Charlotte and, barring injury, it seems likely that he will get some MLB at bats once the rosters are expanded in September.

5/25 AAA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

I hope all of you enjoyed your Memorial Day weekend and found some time to set aside to honor those that have served or are serving in our Armed Forces.  Yesterday’s action in the AAA ranks saw Mets superstar prospect Fernando Martinez belt his 8th HR as did Royals 1B prospect Kila Ka’aihue.  Carlos Gonzalez had three hit, including his 6th dinger and slow starting ‘05 1st rounders Jeff Clement and Andrew McCutchen each collected three hits and scored two runs to raise their season averages over the .290 mark.

Today’s top prospect is no stranger to this list.  Boston’s Clay Buchholz tossed a complete game shutout yesterday, toying with perfection before allowing a single by Danny Richar in the 9th inning.  He went on to strike out the next two batters and end the game on a groundout.  Buchholz struck out seven in the game and threw just 96 pitches, 70 of them for strikes.  Stuff has never been a question for Clay, but he struggled with his control last season when he was with the big club.  All signs indicate that he has put those troubles behind him this year as he has completely dominated hitters in the International League this year.  In 8 starts, Buchholz is 3-0 with a 1.30 ERA, 12 BB/49 K’s and holding hitters to a miniscule .140 BAA in 48 innings.  The time is coming soon where Boston will once again call upon Buchholz to pitch in their rotation.  Odds are that he will enjoy much more success this time through.

5/22 AA Minor League Report

Yesterday was a good day to be a hitter in Midland’s lineup.  The Oakland A’s’ Texas League affiliate scored 24 runs and rapped 28 hits in a win over Corpus Christi.  Matt Spencer had four hits and four RBI, Matt Sulentic hit his 3rd HR and drove in three, while Adrian Cardenas went 4-5 with three RBI and five runs scored.  Mike Baxter collected five hits and four RBI for the San Antonio Missions and Andrew Lambo, Juan Francisco, Mike McKenry, Mark Trumbo, Marvin Lowrance, and John Shelby Jr. all went deep for their prospective clubs.  Junichi Tazawa tossed six shutout innings in a no-decision while Chuck Lofgren and Jake Arrieta both looked dominant in losing causes.

Today’s top prospect is yet another bat from Midland’s lineup and a repeat offender for the player of the day award.  Oakland A’s OF prospect Corey Brown went 4-5 with his 5th HR, six RBI, two doubles, a triple and five runs scored.  The effort raised his season batting average to .326 and helped him break out of a 3-22 skid in which he had struck out 9 times.  Brown has an abundance of exciting tools to work with and could develop into a 30 HR 20 SB player at the major league level.  The K’s are the big thing to watch with him.  In his 30 HR season from a year ago, Brown whiffed 168 times in 134 games.  He has shown the ability to take a walk, but he still gets himself into trouble by chasing pitches out of the strike zone.  This leads to dry spells that can have a mitigating effect on his BA and OBP numbers.

AA Player of the Day—COREY BROWN
