Yesterday’s weather maladies makes today’s AA report an abbreviated one. Brandon Snyder continues to make me look like a smart prognosticator as he blasted his 6th HR and kept his batting average steady at .375. He is the top 1st baseman in the O’s system and could be in line for a promotion to AAA soon. His bat, in my opinion is major league ready and he should get serious consideration for a starting gig in 2010. The White Sox’s first baseman Brandon Allen also continues to be impressive as he hit his 5th HR and drove in two runs. Allen has drastically cut back on his strikeout totals while keeping his walk rate at a respectable level. Allen is hitting .296 on the year and, like Snyder, could be in line for a promotion soon. Since we’re on the topic of 1st basemen. Oakland’s slugger Chris Carter has not yet duplicated the power numbers from last year, but has still found ways to consistently drive in runs and score on a consistent basis. If history is any indicator, the HR’s will come soon for the A’s slugger.
Today’s top AA performance comes via the left arm of Baltimore’s Jake Arrieta. The former TCU Horned Frog tossed seven innings of one-hit ball, striking out 10. Arrieta is now 4-1 on the season and has punched out 42 hitters in 33.1 IP. Control is still something that he’ll need to harness, but a promotion to AAA seems to be an inevitablility, perhaps soon after Chris Tillman’s post-June 1 ascention into the O’s rotation. The O’s have an uber-bright future rotation with Tillman, Arrieta, David Hernandez, Brian Matusz and Zach Britton.

I have a little window of time to give you the reports for Saturday’s games as I have been super busy with family festivities. Saturday’s games saw Tommy Hanson continue his dominance of the International league as he threw seven two-hit innings of shutout ball striking out seven and earning his second win of the season. Teammate and best friend Kris Medlen may be beating him to the Braves rotation, but rest assured that they will both be pitching there for the bulk of the 2009 season. Brett Wallace looked exceptional in his AAA debut going 3-4 with two runs and an RBI. His presence in Memphis’ lineup should help to improve the bats of both Jon Jay and Allen Craig. As good as Wallace was, he was outshone by the sterling pitching performance of P.J. Walters who tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out 9. Jake Fox continues to put forth an MVP performance this season with a 3-4 day scoring two runs and raising his season average to .429. On Friday night, Fox clubbed his 16th HR and, with his 46 RBI, he has continually pushed the envelope for another Cubbie callup.
Today’s top L.A. Angels prospect is 2B/SS Sean Rodriguez. Sean-Rod went 5-5 with two HR, boosting his total to 14, and driving in 5 RBI. He also scored three times. The Angels are a team that is impending transition with several of their stars aging, therefore ushering in the need for a new era of talent. Rodriguez, along with Brandon Wood seem to be in line to inherit roles with the big league club, but they have struggled to show that capability during their brief stints with the big club. Both Wood and Rodriguez are still just 23 years old and have immense offensive potential that should be realized within the next season or two, either with the Angels or another big league club.
AAA Player of the Day—SEAN RODRIGUEZ
