Yesterday’s games saw Atlanta Braves 1B prospect Freddie Freeman continue his hot streak with three more hits. Oakland A’s prospects Corey Brown and Jemile Weeks had nice outings as Brown rapped three more RBI’s and Weeks doubled twice and drove in two runs. San Diego Padres prospect Lance Zawadzki put a black mark on Aaron Crow’s professional debut by taking him deep, though Crow looked pretty sharp allowing just two runs on three hits in his four innings.

In Mesa, Andrew Cashner logged four no-hit innings, walking two and striking out four for his first win of the season. Boston Red Sox SS/P prospect Casey Kelly had his best day with the bat, doubling, tripling and driving in four runs.

Today’s top prospect is the hands down best player in Arizona this fall, Grant Desme. The A’s slugger remarkably tallied two more HR’s to raise his league leading total to 10. Desme is now just four behind Brandon Wood’s AFL record and his .469 BA and 22 RBI leads the league right now. Desme quietly had a big season for the A’s at Low-A Kane County and High-A Stockton, hitting .288 with 31 HR 89 RBI 40 SB and 98 runs scored. Desme’s biggest culpability right now is his contact issues as he struck out 148 time in 131 games. To date, Desme has fanned 14 times in 12 games, but his eight walks and 23 hits in that span makes his aggressive approach at the plate tolerable, if not encouraging. Desme doesn’t have any first year cards right now, but when they do arrive (‘09 Bowman Draft?) they should command a solid market right out of the gate.

Back to the keyboard to provide some more AFL updates. Tuesday’s games saw Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Jose Tabata have his best game as at the plate, going 3-6 with his first HR and six RBI. Tigers SS prospect Cale Iorg logged his first dinger as well, driving in three and scoring three times. Freddie Freeman went yard and looks to be emerging from an early season slump.

In Phoenix, the Oakland A’s OF tandem of Corey Brown and Grant Desme are providing ample evidence that the A’s’ present offensive woes may become a thing of the past. Desme is currently leading the league with eight dingers and, though he didn’t add to that total Tuesday, he did drive in two runs and score three times. Brown, an Oklahoma State alum, also had three RBI on the strength of his fourth HR of the season. Both Brown and Desme are highly athletic players who have the ability to hit 30 HR per season at the major league level.

Tuesday’s top star, however, is household name Stephen Strasburg. The Nationals’ franchise player bounced back big time from his lousy outing last week by tossing 4.1 innings of one-hit, one run ball walking one and striking out five for his second win of the season. Despite the poor outing last week, Strasburg’s various 2008 and 2009 cards remain white hot commodities on the eBay trading floor. A couple more outings like this will only amply that market.

Yesterday’s AFL results are littered with four hit performances from the likes of Bryan Petersen, Starlin Castro, Jon Lucroy, and Carlos Rivero, not to mention HR’s by Grant Desme (#3), Brad Emaus, Chris Parmelee, Matt Dominguez, and Russ Mitchell (#3). Today’s top performer is L.A. Dodgers OF prospect Andrew Lambo. The 21 year old blasted his second HR of the fall as part of a three hit day, driving in four runs and scoring three times. The former 2007 4th round pick has had a scalding start to his AFL campaign, hitting .478 with 2 HR 9 RBI and 6 runs scored in his six outings. The Dodgers are by no means extending Ramirez’s contract beyond the 2010 season and will be in hoc for a significant portion of his deferred contract for several seasons beyond ‘10. Lambo is not quite ready for a starting OF role with the Dodgers yet, but his start to the AFL season looks like it could catapult him into a significant role in the latter months of next season. Lambo, at his peak, has the same offensive capabilities of current Dodgers RF and first time All-Star Andre Ethier. The market for Lambo’s 2008 Bowman Chrome autos is pretty undervalued right now as many of them can be fetched for $6-8 each and refractors (#/500) for about $10 a pop. Given his upside as future 25-30 HR guy, this seems to be an excellent opportunity to snag a few at single digit prices.

The 2009 Arizona Fall League season kicked off in grand fashion yesterday with several fine offensive performances. Homeruns by Phillies top prospect Domomic Brown, Baltimore’s Brandon Snyder, Washington’s Chris Marrero, and Minnesota’s Rene Tosoni helped to fuel fine offensive outputs for their clubs but today’s top performance came from NY Mets 1B prospect and former 1st round selection Ike Davis. The 6-5 son of former Minnesota Twins pitcher Ron Davis went 4-6 yesterday with his first Hr, six RBI and two doubles to pace the Surprise Rafters 17 run output against the Peoria Javelinas.

Davis had a big time bounce back over two levels in his first full professional season, hitting .298 with 20 HR 71 RBI and 31 doubles. With Carlos Delgado’s time with the organization at a likely close, the focus for the next Mets 1B may turn to within the organization. A short term salve may be Nick Evans but Davis’ long term potential is considerably better than Evans and current Rafter teammate Lucas Duda. If Davis continues to tear the cover off of the ball this fall, thinks could get real interesting at that spot this coming spring.

Yesterday’s scoreboard was limited almost exclusively to the Eastern League so today’s breakdown may be a little thin. Carlos Santana came a homerun away from hitting for the cycle, driving in his 83rd and 84th runs of the season. Santana has hit full stride this season after a July that saw him hit .311 with 8 HR and 29 RBI. For the season, the Indians’ young receiver is hitting .288 with 20 HR 84 RBI 25 doubles and 74 runs scored. Like last year, the plate discipline continues to be one of Santana’s strong suits as his 71 BB/68 K has helped to push his OBP to .410 this year. Santana is a guy who can hit at the major league level right now and probably will do so very soon. The trade of Victor Martinez has opened the door wide open for Carlos and there is not much that either Kelly Shoppach or Lou Marson can do to hold him back. Currently, Santana’s 2008 Bowman Sterling autos sell for $22-25 each and his Razor Metal autos command about $9-12 each. Santana ranks amongst Matt Wieters and Buster Posey as one of baseball’s elite young catchers. If he can secure a spot in Cleveland’s opening day lineup next year, he should be one of the early AL ROY favorites.

Today’s top prospect is Florida Marlins top prospect Michael Stanton. Yesterday, Stanton hit his 24th HR on the season as part of a three hit, three RBI day. The 19 year old has struggled during the month of August hitting just .227 during his first 11 games. This isn’t too big of a surprise. The Marlins are moving him quickly through their system and the plate discipline has had trouble catching up. After posting promising BB/K numbers (28/45) at High-A, Stanton has not been able to replicate that success at the AA level as he has walked 21 times and has 72 strikeouts in 56 games. The power has carried forward though and I think the plate discipline will emerge as Stanton gathers more experience. The eBay market for Stanton’s various 2008 autos has remained solid throughout this season with his heavily traded Bowman Chrome autos selling at $32-35 each, but his Razor autos (#/1199) have slipped to single digits in value. I think that Stanton should stay in AA for the remainder of the season and will benefit greatly from playing in an offseason league. He’ll be just 20 years old on opening day next year and should start the season in AAA before earning a much heralded callup at some point next season. Watch to see if the market cools during the offseason and pounce on some of his autos.

Cincinatti Reds 3B prospect Juan Francisco hit his 20th HR yesterday, driving in two and scoring twice. Francisco has as much power potential as anyone in the Reds’ farm system and has made big strides this season to cut back on his strikeouts. Last year, Francisco hit 23 HR and drove in 92 runs while earning a 19 BB/123 K ratio in 127 games. This season, Francisco has kept his power numbers up and has cut back his K rate to 88 in 100 games. He’s only walked 19 times, but the progress at a higher level is worthy of note. The market for Francisco’s first year cards was hot at the end of last season as several collectors anticipated him to become one of the top sluggers in the minor leagues this season. However, a slow start and mitigable increases in his numbers has caused several prospectors to divert their funds elsewhere. His 2008 autos in Donruss Threads (#/999) and his Donruss Elite Extra autos #/1495 can be had at $4-7 each-roughly 1/3 their values in late 2008.

Pedro Alvarez continues to be a beast at the AA level as he socked his 8th HR at Altoona and 22nd on the season. He added two doubles and two RBI during a three hit day and raised his post-promotion average to .307. The Pirates made more big trades at the deadline that will go a long way in overhauling a once maligned farm system. With each trade, new opportunities sprout up for aspiring youngsters to make their mark in a major league uniform. Alvarez will get his shot this season. I mused in my Brian Matusz article about the market effect that would occur in his cards after his debut. Matusz, like Alvarez, has an exclusive deal with Razor Entertainment Group which effectively limits the exposure of his cards on the eBay market.

Matusz had a fine and victorious debut surrendering one run on six hits over five innings, walking three and striking out five Detroit Tigers. In the hours following his performance, the prices of his ‘08 Razor autos have jumped about 30-40%. It is nice to see that the cards are considered viable investments on the open market, but the rise in price is on par with what other larger brands would experience in similar situations. In other words, the fact that Razor has exclusive deals with several ‘08 draftees does not, at this time, seem to have a pronounced inflationary effect on the values of their cards.

Today’s top prospect doesn’t have a major brand card issued as of yet, but that may change soon. Chicago White Sox RHP prospect Dan Hudson was dominant once agains yesterday, scattering three hits over six scoreless innings, striking out seven. The dominant performance raised the former Old Dominion hurler to 7-0 since his promotion to Birmingham and gave him his 12th victory of the ‘09 season. Hudson was ranked the 24th best prospect in the White Sox farm system by Baseball America but he’s pitched as well as anyone, including departed prospects Aaron Poreda and Dexter Carter. Hudson has been virtually unhittable at each of the three levels he’s thrown at this season as hitters are batting a combined .191 against him. Just as impressive is his sterling 25 BB/142 K ratio in his 123 innings of work. Hudson has a workhorse frame (6-4 220 lb.) and features a 92-94 MPH fastball that saws off right handers and fades away from lefties. His slider and changeup are a bit behind, but each offers good downward movement that keeps him from getting hit hard. The vacancy left by Poreda and Carter elevates Hudson to the upper ranks of Chicago’s young arms. Hudson will likely finish the year at AA and should be a prime candidate to pitch in the Arizona Fall League. Keep your eyes peeled for his first year cards and snag them early as he might not gain as much post-release notoriety as he deserves. Secondary sites like Sportsbuy.com and Beckett.com should provide excellent values for his non-autographed releases.

Last ngiht’s AA action saw the debut of Florida Marlins elite prospect Michael Stanton. Touted by some to be the second coming of Dave Winfield, Stanton collected two hits in four AB and drove in two runs. His promotion to Jacksonville seems to be well-timed and I am most interested to see if he can continue to be disciplined at the plate. Prior to his promotion, Stanton had a solid 28 BB/45 K through his first 50 games. Could he make his big league debut this season? I think not, but a trip to the Arizona Fall League in the offseason could be the final bit of seasoning for Stanton before his big league debut.

In other action, Beau MIlls hit HR #5 and drove in two runs. He’s been a little bit of a disappointment in the early going, hitting .261 with 5 HR and 21 RBI for an offesively anemic Akron Aeros team, but his early returns from June have been solid (.381 HR 3 RBI 6 runs) and his big league bloodlines are reason to extend a bit of patienct to the 22 year old 1B prospect. Speaking of first basemen, Oakland A’s slugger Chris Carter blasted his 7th HR, drove in two runs, walked twice and stole his 7th base of the season. As predicted by me, Carter’s power has returned after hitting just one HR during the month of April. Even more encouraging is the fact that Carter’s pitch recognition and plate discipline has taken a step forward as his 34 BB/53 K ratio is a marked improvement from his 77 BB/156 K performance from a year ago.

Today’s top AA performer is New York Yankees right hander Zach McAllister who tossed 7.2 shutout innings, striking out six for his 5th victory of the season. The 21 year old McAllister has had an understatedly excellent season as a Yankee farm hand, going 5-2 with a 1.61 ERA and a very respectable 18 BB/48 K ratio through his first 61 innings. McAllister has allowed just one HR in his first 10 starts and has held hitters to a .220 BA. The former 2006 draft pick looks to be a mid-rotation workhorse with a four-seam fastball that approaches 95 MPH and a two-seamer with good sink that sits at 89-91 MPH. His slider and changeup are solid pitches that have made significant strides over the past season and it is on the strength of those offspeed offerings that McAllister has been able to vastly elevate his stock within the organization.

From a market perspective, McAllister’s optimal values will be realized if he is able to stay in pinstripes. However, as his stock increases, so does his value as a late season trading chip for a Yankees team that is in a heated pennant chase with the Boston Red Sox. Don’t be surprised if McAllister’s name starts to get floated around as a potential part of a trade deadline deal. While that would bode well for the 6-6 230 lb righty’s immediate baseball future, his best market gains would be realized if he can make his MLB debut in a Yankees uniform.

Cincinnati Reds 3B prospect Juan Francisco blasted HR’s 8 and 9 yesterday while his teammate Zack Cozart hit his second. Lars Anderson went yard for the 6th time and Philly’s Michael Taylor hit his 8th, helping teammate Joe Savery earn his 4th win of the year.

Yesterday was a big day for Birmingham’s top sluggers as Tyler Flowers hit his 6th HR, Dayan Viciedo had four hits and an RBI, and Brandon Allen had three hits. It was ‘08 1st rounder Gordon Beckham who took home top honors, however, as he went 3-5 with his 4th HR five RBI and two runs scored. Beckham raised his average to .307 and his 17 doubles indicate that there is a good chance that he will boost his power numbers in the not too distant future. The White Sox currently are set at SS with Alexei Ramirez and rookie Chris Getz has been decent at 2B. Beckham’s star is rising, however, and there is no chance that Getz will be able to hold him off once the White Sox deem him ready for a major league job. Odds are quite high that Beckham will receive a mid-summer promotion to AAA Charlotte and, barring injury, it seems likely that he will get some MLB at bats once the rosters are expanded in September.

Gordon Beckham and Jordan Danks each homered for the Birmingham Barons, while Lars Anderson had his best performance in what has been a challenging two months. The Red Sox top prospect hit his 5th HR of the season while driving in four runs, scoring twice and walking three times. Pittsburgh Pirates righty Brad Lincoln tossed a two-hit complete game shutout for his first win of the season but it wasn’t enough to surpass what may be the top MiLB performance of the year.

Cleveland Indians youngster Jeanmar Gomez tossed a perfect game today against the Trenton Thunder. The 21 year old Venezuelan has been nearly unhittable since his promotion to Akron, allowing just one run in 29 innings and winning each of his four starts. Even more impressive than the .097 BAA, is the fact that Gomez has allowed just one walk during that time while striking out 26 hitters. Gomez has a lanky frame that has added strength over the past four seasons. His fastball sits comfortably at 90-92 MPH while reaching 94 on occasion. His curveball has an 11-5 break to it and is a plus pitch. The key to Gomez’s success this season has been his ability to command the strike zone and force ground ball outs.

Ahhhhh, nothing beats a hot shower after a good workout! I am back now and ready to get back on the prospecting track. Yesterday’s AA action saw Justin Smoak hit his 6th HR while O’s 1st Baseman Brandon Snyder and Detroit’s Scott Sizemore each hit their 7th. Troy Patton outdueled Daniel Moskos en route to win #4 and Chicago’s Jay Jackson tossed six scoreless innings, striking out eight in a no-decision.

Today’s top youngster from the AA ranks is Philadelphia Phillies 2B prospect Brad Harman. The former WBC Team Australia mate went 3-4 with his 4th HR, four RBI and two runs scored. Harman has excellent pop for a second baseman, hitting 17 HR last season, and while he is not ranked as one of Philly’s top 30 prospects, he is the top second base prospect in the Phillies’ farm system. Harman has improved his batting average considerably this year in his second AA go around, but his plate discipline and ability to work counts continues to be a struggle for him. With Chase Utley ahead of him, there is no rush to promote the 23 year old Harman through the minor leagues, and his best opportunities down the road would be best served with another organization.
