Brandon Wood hit two more homeruns last night to raise his season’s total at AAA Salt Lake City to 19. Wood continues to demonstrate, like his teammate Sean Rodriguez, that he can be a devastating power hitter at the AAA level while struggling mightily in a major league lineup. Personally, I think that both of these guys would benefit greatly from a change of scenery. The Angels’ success over the years has limited the margin of patience that they can exercise towards giving players opportunities to play through their growing pains. A move to a rebuilding franchise would give each of these young and highly talented players that opportunity. That won’t happen this year, though, and is a minute possibility in the offseason. Both Wood and Rodriguez are still just 24 and I remain optimistic that they will get a chance within the next season to earn playing time either in an Angels jersey or for another franchise. Wood’s 2003 Bowman Chrome Draft auto is still a prevalent commodity on the eBay market, but the price has settled down into the $15-18 range. While this remains a moderately high risk investment, the 2003 Bowman Chrome Draft cards, both autos and non-autos have proven to be high demand items in the past.
Today’s top prospect is St. Louis Cardinals OF Shane Robinson. The 24 year old centerfielder went 2-3 yesterday with his 4th HR, five RBI, two runs scored and his 16th SB. Robinson is the prototypical fourth outfielder type who plays solid defense and hits for good contact. However, there is not much punch to speak of in his bat and Memphis teammate Jon Jay has a higher ceiling than him going forward.

Eric Young Jr. couldn’t stay off of the bases as he rapped two hits and drew three walks yesterday, scoring three times. Oddly, he didn’t add to his PCL-leading total of 54 stolen bases but his three runs scored yesterday brings his season total to an MiLB high of 99 for the season. Young’s name was bantied about in trade rumors but the Rockies held fast to their speedy 2B prospect. There was some thought prior to last season of moving Young to the outfield where his speed and marginal infield glove would be a better fit. Young has work dilligently over the past couple of years to improve his infield defense, cutting his errors nearly in half and raising his fielding percentage by more than 20 points. Clint Barmes is the current second basemen for the Rockies, but he is arbitration eligible and due to receive a raise from his current $1.6M contract. Young is ready to take over the helm and is a much more potent top of the lineup hitter. Unlike many speedsters, Young has some pop in his bat. This season, the 24 year old has collected 30 XBH and his 49 BB/64 K ratio falls in line with a prototypical top of the order hitter. Expect Young to get his callup by September and to be the odds on favorite to be the opening day starter in 2010.
Today’s top prospect is rapidly rising catcher Buster Posey. The Giants’ future backstop hit his first AAA HR, driving in four runs and scoring twice. Posey had gotten off to a slow start after his promotion, but has regrouped to hit .281 over his last 10 games. Posey’s plate discipline has not waned as he has a 55 BB/55 K ratio. I expect Posey to continue to swing a hot bat through the rest of the AAA season, which should enhance his chances to earn some playing time behind Benji Molina at some point in September. Molina’s contract expires at the end of the ‘09 season and it seems quite reasonable that he will not return to the Giants in 2010. The market for Posey’s cards is understandibly hot right now as he has rapidly shot up through San Francisco’s farm system. His top selling cards are his 2008 Bowman Chrome Draft autos which command a healthy $37-42 each. There are more affordable first year autos to be had, like his ‘08 Donruss Elite Extra autos (#/934) which command $27-32 each, 08 Bowman Sterling ($24-27), and ‘08 Razor ($20-22). Even with this elevated market, I think there is still room for some value growth in his products, especially if he can help contribute to the Giants’ pennant run. A more opportune time to purchase his first year autos, though, should be during the offseason when the collecting masses diverts its attention to football cards and memorabilia.

Prior to the start of the ‘09 season, San Diego Padres 2B prospect Eric Sogard was very high on my sleepers list. Perhaps it was his excellent first season in the California League (.308 10 HR 87 RBI 92 runs 42 doubles) or the fact that he is a former ASU Sun Devil, but I couldn’t help but compare him to ‘08 AL MVP Dustin Pedroia. While the two share many similarities, style of play, body size and structure, plate discipline, etc., Sogard’s got a long way to go before those comparisons have any merit. The fact remains, however, that Eric Sogard is an intriguing MLB talent. After a slow month of May that saw him hit .212, he bounced back nicely during the month of June by hitting .314 with 21 runs scored and 11 RBI in 24 games. Sogard’s main competition for the 2B job with the Padres is the disappointing enigma known as Matt Antonelli. I believe that he will leapfrog him by this point next season, perhaps into a starting job with the Padres.
Madison Bumgarner remains the top left handed pitching prospect in all of baseball, but the hype for him has cooled a little bit since his promotion to Connecticut. Regardless, the former ‘07 1st rounder continues to tack up wins. His seven innings of four hit, shutout ball netted him his sixth AA win and ninth overall for the season. Bumgarner has allowed just one earned run over his last 19 innings, but the strikeout numbers have been down a little bit and his 19 BB/66 K in 74 innings is less impressive that last year’s Nintendo-like 21 BB/164 K’s in 141 innings. Also, it seems like Bumgarner’s workload has increased over his last two outings (8 IP and 7 IP respectively). Perhaps this is because the Giants are edging into playoff contention and the chances that Bumgarner will be called upon to pitch for San Fran in 2009 are waning. I believe that Bumgarner can hold his own against MLB hitters right now, but holding him back until 2010 may be the more prudent move. Watch the market for his cards. If it dips, jump on his stuff now. He’ll have a prominent role with the Giants in 2010.
Today’s top prospect is another southpaw, Baltimore Orioles top ‘08 draftee Brian Matusz. his seven shutout innings marked his third consecutive dominant start at Bowie where he’s gone 3-0 with a 0.49 ERA and 6 BB/21 K in 18.1 IP. Matusz has been flat out dominant this season going 7-2 with a 1.80 ERA in 14 starts this year. His 27 BB/96 K ratio in 85 IP is a fine indicator that he is commanding his mid-90’s heater well while keeping hitters honest with his slider and change. He profiles as a #2 or 3 starter for a Baltimore Orioles rotation that could soon rival that of the pennant winning O’s of 1979.

Oakland A’s 1B of the future Chris Carter continues to pound the baseball, going 2-3 yesterday with his 13th HR six runs batted in and two runs scored. I predicted at the beginning of June that Carter was due to go off on a power rampage and, suffice to say it, he has. Over his last 100 AB, Carter is hitting .313 with 7 HR 19 RBI and a 19 BB/24 K ratio. His improvements in his approach at the plate has resulted in a 40 point rise in batting average. Also, Sean Doolittle’s injuries and potential move to the OF has opened the door wide for Carter to be the premier 1B prospect in Oakland’s farm system. Jason Giambi is a one season hold over and Daric Barton offers a paper-thin resistance to Carter’s comprehensive skill set. The A’s are desperate for offensive fire power and the 6-4 225 lb. Carter offers it in abundance. He should make a move to AAA Sacramento at some point this summer and if Oakland continues to play last place baseball in the AL West, he should get a look at some point in September. I expect that Chris Carter will get to continue his development at the Arizona Fall League this winter before getting a long look by the A’s this following spring.
Today’s player de jour is the always impressive Michael Taylor of the Philadelphia Phillies organization. The Stanford alum collected three more hits yesterday, including his 14th HR, four RBI and two runs scored. Taylor’s banner day raised his season batting average to .342 . He’s bound to earn a promotion soon either to AAA or, perhaps, to Philly. The eBay market for Taylor’s cards has been red hot as of late with his ‘07 Bowman Chrome Draft cards selling at $2.00-2.50 each and his ‘08 Donruss Elite autos (#/720) ranging between $20-25 each. There is quite a bit of room for all of Taylor’s cards to grow. His blend of power, speed, plate discipline and batting average and his athletic 6-6 250 lb. frame spells S-U-C-C-E-S-S at the major league level.

If you like offense, and oh how us prospectors do, then the AA performances from yesterday will bring a smile to your face. Cleveland’s 1B prospect Beau Mills blasted two HR and drove in four runs yesterday, while Detroit farmhands Scott Sizemore and Brennan Boesch each hit their 9th HR’s of the young season. Desmond Jennings rapped three hits including his 6th dinger and Angels 1B prospect Mark Trumbo also hit his 6th while driving in four runs. San Diego Padres OF prospect Mike Baxter added four more hits, including his 3rd HR and 21st double en route to a 3 RBI day. Baxter now has 21 hits over his last 10 games (.538 BA) with 13 RBI and 12 runs scored. Baxter’s effort helped elite pitching prospect Mat Latos earn his 1st AA win, though he probably didn’t need the help. Latos allowed just one hit over seven scoreless innings, walking two and striking out seven. Latos is now 4-0 on the year and has allowed a stingy .059 BA since his promotion to San Antonio.
Today’s top prospect is Philadelphia Phillies OF Michael Taylor. The former Stanford slugger has been swinging a hot bat as of late, hitting .432 with 3 HR and 13 RBI over his last 10 games. Taylor’s day yesterday was probably his best outing of the season, as he went 5-6 with his 9th HR, six RBI and two runs scored. Taylor is a mythical blend of power, speed, and discipline that should make him the perfect offensive weapon at the next level. So far this season, the 6-6 250 lb. Taylor is batting .342 with 9 HR 37 RBI and 8 SB. He should earn a promotion to AAA soon with an outside shot of making his MLB debut in ‘09. There really is no rush Taylor along as the OF is pretty well set right now with the trifecta of Ibanez, Victorino, and Werth. As good as things right now in the green grasse of Citizen’s Bank Ballpark, the rapid development of Taylor and top prospect Dominic Brown promises an even rosier future.

With the Texas League taking the day off, yesterday’s AA slate of games was somewhat light. Jordan Danks hit his 2nd HR of the year and scored twice while teammate John Shelby Jr. enjoyed a nice day at the plate hitting his 4th dinger and driving in three runs. Tampa Bay’s Desmond Jennings hit his 5th HR as did lesser known Red Sox 1B prospect Aaron Bates.
Yesterday’s top performer is New York Yankees RHP Zach McAllister. The 21 year old tosses seven shutout innings, allowing just four hits and striking out five. After a highly successful 2008, McAllister continues to shine in the AA ranks going 3-2 with a 1.91 ERA and 15 BB/32 K in his first 47 innings. McAllister has a solid fastball that ranges from 91-94 MPH and he also mixes in a 89-91 MPH two seamer that has nasty sink to it. Offspeed pitches include a solid slider and changeup that he commands well in the strike zone. Despite his frontline starter size and velocity, McAllister pitches to contact and looks to induce ground ball outs. I can’t help but think that he has some projection left in that frame that could add some power and velocity to his stuff. McAllister should pitch the majority of the season at AA before earning a mid to late summer promotion to AAA.

Ahhhhh, nothing beats a hot shower after a good workout! I am back now and ready to get back on the prospecting track. Yesterday’s AA action saw Justin Smoak hit his 6th HR while O’s 1st Baseman Brandon Snyder and Detroit’s Scott Sizemore each hit their 7th. Troy Patton outdueled Daniel Moskos en route to win #4 and Chicago’s Jay Jackson tossed six scoreless innings, striking out eight in a no-decision.
Today’s top youngster from the AA ranks is Philadelphia Phillies 2B prospect Brad Harman. The former WBC Team Australia mate went 3-4 with his 4th HR, four RBI and two runs scored. Harman has excellent pop for a second baseman, hitting 17 HR last season, and while he is not ranked as one of Philly’s top 30 prospects, he is the top second base prospect in the Phillies’ farm system. Harman has improved his batting average considerably this year in his second AA go around, but his plate discipline and ability to work counts continues to be a struggle for him. With Chase Utley ahead of him, there is no rush to promote the 23 year old Harman through the minor leagues, and his best opportunities down the road would be best served with another organization.

Josh Bell hit HR #3 and drove in three runs while Tampa Bay Rays Aussie prospect Rhyne Hughes hit his 13th dinger and drove in four. Desmond Jennings stole three bases yesterday and Gorkys Hernandez had three hits and scored three runs.
Today’s top performer is Chicago Cubs infield prospect Marquez Smith. The 23 year old Clemson alum combined for six hits in a double header, hitting his 6th and 7th HR, while driving in four and scoring five times. Smith is a compact player with more athleticism and defensive versatility than his 5-10 210 lb. frame suggests. He can play 2B, 3B, the corner OF spots and has been postulated as being a decent candidate to switch to catcher, given his strong arm and thick build. Offensively, Smith is an aggressive hitter who makes good contact and drives balls well to the gaps. The Cubs don’t have a lot of positional depth in their farm system giving a defensively malleable player like Smith ample opportunities to slide into the upper tiers of the organizational depth chart.

Mets catching prospect Josh Thole gathered a handful of hits yesterday, scoring two runs and driving in one. Michael Taylor blasted his 6th HR and drove in four runs, Tampa Bay Rays 3B prospect Rhyne Hughes hit his 12th Hr and drove in three and Padres OF Cedric Hunter continued to raise his average with a three hit, three RBI day. On the mound, Kasey Kiker continues to pitch like he did in ‘07, tossing six solid innings of two run, eight strikeout ball, Joe Savery won his third game and young Indians prospect Jeanmar Gomez tossed eight innings of shutout ball, striking out eight and winning his 5th game.
Today’s top AA player is L.A. Dodgers 3B prospect Josh Bell. The former 2005 4th round pick suffered a knee injury last year that cut his season to just 51 games, but after going through a rigorous off season training regimen he looks as healthy and strong as he has ever been. His 6-3 235 lb. frame gives him an imposing presence at the plate, but the power has not manifested itself yet as it has in seasons past. In place of the HR totals, however, is an increased amount of plate discipline (23 BB/25K) and increased agility at the hot corner. Bell’s card sales have dropped off considerably since his injury last season and concerns that arose from his poor plate discipline two years ago. Currently, his 2008 Bowman Chrome Autos sell for $3-4 each and his refractors (#/500) are a bargain at just a buck or two more. Bell, if he stays healthy, is a prime candidate to break out from underneath the radar and onto L.A.’s Top 20 prospect list.

Now Healthy and Using His Tools Well
He’s Baaaaack!
Last year’s injury riddled season deflated some helium out of the hype balloon that the young Rays OF prospect created with a stellar 2007 season that saw him hit .315 with 9 HR 37 RBI 45 SB and 75 runs scored in just 99 games at Low-A Columbus. Jennings missed the first two months of the ‘08 season recovering from a back injury and played just 24 games at High-A Vero Beach before he had season ending shoulder surgery. Jennings recovered in time to make a brief appearance in the Arizona Fall League where he batted .231 with a HR, 7 RBI and 3 SB in 12 games.
What I wrote on 11/24/08 for Hot-Prospects.net:
2008 was a lost season for the Rays’ top OF prospect. Jennings was limited to just 24 games during the regular season as he suffered a lower back injury and had season ending shoulder surgery. Jennings returned to play in the second half of the Arizona Fall League hitting .231 with a HR 7 RBI and 3 SB in 39 AB. When healthy, Jennings is a bright 5-tool athlete who turned down a scholarship to play WR at Alabama to pursue his baseball career. Jennings has blazing speed and a line drive bat that drives the ball well to the gaps. His long lean frame projects that he could add more power to be a 15-20 HR hitter down the road. Jennings makes good contact at the plate and his advanced strike zone knowledge helps him to draw walks as well. Defensively, Jennings utilizes his eye-popping speed to cover vast swathes of space in CF and his arm strength is solid. The biggest variable to Jennings’ game is his inability to stay healthy. Jennings has had knee surgery, shoulder surgery, and back problems within the past two years, hampering his development as a pro. If he can stay healthy for a sustained amount of time, Desmond is a top-tier future lead-off hitter with All-Star written all over him.
2009 Projection: Jennings’ involvement in the AFL gives the notion that the Rays would like to challenge him with a promotion to AA Montgomery to start the season. Keep an eye on the injury reports and cross your fingers that he doesn’t find his way on the DL next season. If he can reproduce the success that he enjoyed in 2007 at Low-A Columbus, Jennings should move quickly through the Rays’ system with an ETA of mid-summer 2010 being a good possibility. The Rays could use a good lead off hitter with base stealing speed to set the table for Upton-Longoria-Pena. Jennings could be just the right fit.
UPDATE: Jennings has been red hot since being promoted to AA Montgomery, batting .391 with 3 HR 21 RBI 9 SB and 20 runs scored in just 27 games. Additionally, he has combined to hit 7 doubles and 5 triples during that same time frame. The increase in power output has had a slightly detrimental effect on plate discipline as his 6 BB/19 K ratio is less than the stellar numbers he put up in 2007 (45 BB/53 K).
MARKET REPORT: Prospectors are elated with the early success that the 22 year old Tampa Bay Ray has displayed and the market has responded in kind. Per card prices of his 2008 Donruss Threads Autograph (#’ed/749) has increased by more than 400% (I bought one at $4.65) since last November, currently commanding prices of $20-22.50 each. His first year Bowman Chrome base cards are starting to get some more market attention as well as bulk lots have been selling at per card prices of $1.50-2.00 each.
MY TAKE: Jennings is assuredly one of the most athletic and toolsy OF prospects in minor league baseball. His total package of skills easily places him with the elite at that position and there is more room for projection. At 6-2 190 lb., there is reason to believe that Jennings can develop more HR power while not significantly affecting his already elite speed. The main rub with Desmond, however, is the propensity for injuries. His two maladies from last season were not the first as an injury to his lateral miniscus in late 2007 marks three significant injuries sustained in less than two seasons. Players that sustain injuries at young ages have time and again recovered from them to put together long and successful careers. Conversely, injuries have also derailed many a promising career before the player’s full potential is ever realized.
I don’t know where Jennings lies on this list. He appears to be fully healthy and his numbers to this point are eye popping. But the spectre always looms and is some cause for concern. I like the prices of his first year base cards (non-chromes are even cheaper) in bulk and would avocate buying them, but as for his auto….I’ll be happy with my 400% profit and will be selling it now.
