Trevor Cahill made his final start of the spring and, while he didn’t look particularly sharp, he is slated to be Oakland’s #2 man in the rotation against the L.A. Angels. Travis Snider and Pablo Sandoval continue to prove that they can hit MLB pitching really hard as each gathered 3 more hits to push their spring averages well into the .400 range. Today’s youngster of the day is a repeat offender, Colby Rasmus. The 22 year old Cardinals CF went 2-4 with his 1st HR of the spring, a double 2 runs scored and 3 RBI. That performance helped him to cement a spot in St. Louis’ opening day roster, and perhaps, in the starting lineup.

Turning the page on the calendar, I saw the big red circle around April 6th marking the beginning of the 2009 MLB regular season! Spring training has flown by this season at a rocket’s (not steroid enhanced) pace and what a spring it has been for several young players! Wednesday’s action saw all or nothing slugger Michael Wilson of the Seattle Mariners slug his 8th HR of the spring, and super non-rookies Travis Buck and Alex Gordon hit their 4th and 6th HR’s respectively. ‘08 N.L. Rookie of the Year, Geovanny Soto and Mets prospect Omir Santos rang the dinger bell twice, but it was the young pitchers who opened eyes today. San Francisco Giants superstar-in-the-making Madison Bumgarner surrendered just one hit in 3 innings of work while striking out 4, but even that performance was not good enough to usurp the one time phenom Homer Bailey. The Cincinnati Reds hurler tossed 6 innings allowing 4 hits, 2 earned runs a walk an 8 strikeouts. Additionally, he went 2 for 2 at the plate with a double and a run scored. While it may not earn him a spot on the Reds’ rotation, it is surely worthy of receiving today’s Youngster of the Day award.

Offense was the name of the game Sunday as the Cactus League was afire with several spectacular performances. Josh Hamilton belted two HR and drove in five and Chris Davis chimed in with his 5th HR of the spring in Texas’ romp over the Angels. Chris Getz and Brent LIllibridge each logged three hits in the White Sox win. On the mound, Kevin Slowey continued his solid spring tossing 6 innings of two run ball en route to his second win and Phil Coke and Brandon McCarthy each notched their third victory of the spring. The player de jour, though, was light hitting Alberto Callaspo of the Kansas City Royals. Callaspo went 4-6 with three doubles, three runs scored and two runs batted in.

Yesterday my weblink wasn’t working for some reason, but it looks as if that problem is now resolved. Clay Buchholz lowered his spring ERA to 0.48 with 6 dominant innings of 3 hit ball, Brett Anderson tossed 4.1 innings allowing 7 hits and 2 runs while striking out 4. Jarrod Saltalamacchia continued to show that he is the starting catcher for the Rangers this season belting his 1st spring HR, but Rangers 1B Chris Davis upstaged him belting his 3rd HR and collecting 4 RBI. Sean Rodriguez also continued his strong showing with his 1st HR as well. Johnny Cueto locked horns with Buchholz and fired 6 innings of 2 hit 5 strikeout ball. Though he received a no-decision for his efforts, he is dedidedly today’s top youngster.

Today was a day for the pitchers. Pittsburgh’s Ross Ohlendorf continued his impressive spring by tossing 6 shutout innings en route to his first win, Shairon Martis and Koji Uehara locked up in a duel with Martis’ 6 scoreless innings trumping Uehara’s 3.2 IP of one-run, 7K ball. David Purcey looks like the real deal in his 6 one-run innings, but no one matched up to Kevin Slowey’s performance. The 24 year old Twin hurled 5 innings allowing one run while striking out 5 and knocking in 3 runs with a perfect 2-2 day at the plate.

As prospects continue to be shipped to their minor league destinations, the list of young performers grows smaller and smaller. In today’s action, Chris Carter of the Red Sox and Pablo Sandoval of the Giants continue to hit the snot out of the baseball, each gathering 3 hits and a HR (for Carter his 5th and Sandoval his 3rd). Jake Fox and Micah Hoffpauir continue to be two of the undersung heroes of the pre-season for the Chicago Cubs and slow starters Cliff Pennington, Wladimir Balentien, and John Raynor are all heating up at just the right time. Today’s youngster of the day was a real slow starter, but his recent tear has raised his batting average from just .105 a week ago to a much more respectible .242 today. Florida Marlins 2B in waiting Chris Coghlan went 3-4 including his 1st HR of the spring, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.

The wind was blowing out in the Cactus League yesterday, evidenced by the 15 HR softball game between the Angels and Royals. The opposite was true in the Grapefruit League where there were, count them, 5 shutouts including a no-hit effort led by the Marlins’ Ricky Nolasco against the Detroit Tigers. David Price looked dominant yesterday tossing 4 shutout innings and lowering his ERA to 1.08, and Daniel Bard extended his scoreless string to 9.1 IP. Brandon Wood belted his 3rd HR of the spring, Seattle’s Mike Wilson hit his 5th and Boston’s Chris Carter continued to look like a solid DH with his 4th HR. No one bettered the efforts of L.A. Angels OF prospect Matt Brown who was a perfect 6-6 with 2 HR, a triple 3 runs and 3 RBI.

Nelson Cruz keeps looking like a big time breakout candidate as he smacked his 4th HR today and super OF prospects Jason Heyward and Austin Jackson both hit their second bombs of the spring. It seems like every time I look at at box score, Pablo Sandoval has two hits and an RBI. Tuesday was no exception. Aaron Cunnigham went yard for the first time this spring as did Atlanta Braves speedster Josh Anderson. Jose Tabata continues to swing a hot bat and Jesus Guzman belted his third HR of the spring. The top youngster of the day, though, was Braves SP Jair Jurrjens who tossed 6 shutout innings allowing just 4 hits and fanning 6 hitters en route to his first win of the spring.

Quite honestly, today was a ho-hum day for several of the top prospects. Joba Chamberlain, David Price, Daniel Bard and Trevor Cahill pitched their way to wins and Travis Snider belted a mammoth HR, but aside from that, it was a slow day.
