5/22 AAA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on May 23, 2009 under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

Several of the usual prospects make this list and, as players from the AAA ranks keep getting recalled to their major league clubs, the list of true prospects to report about gets smaller and smaller.  Andrew McCutchen hit his 2nd HR of the season and Brandon Wood hit #10.  Today’s top performances, however, were on the mound.  Red Sox pitcher Charlie Zink tossed eight quality innings allowing a run on three hits for his 3rd win.  Padres righty, Will Inman struck out nine over 5.2 innings but today’s competition boils down to two American League pitching prospects.

Vin Mazzaro had another dominant performance tossing eight innings of one-hit ball, striking out six in a no-decision.  Mazzaro has now allowed just one run over his last 23 innings of work and has held opponents to a .207 BAA–quite a feat considering the tough pitching atmosphere in the PCL.  In the International League, Baltimore Orioles righty David Hernandez surrendered three unearned runs, all in the 8th inning, in 7.1 IP on just three hits, no walks and 14 strikeouts.  Hernandez has followed up last year’s breakout season by continuing his dominance at Norfolk, going 3-1 with a 2.91 ERA and 60 K’s in just 43.1 IP.  Last year, Hernandez paced the Orioles organization with 166 K’s.  His fastball sits between 90-92 MPH, hitting 94 on occasion.  Hernandez has a deceptive delivery and hides the ball well from hitters.  In addition to his fastball, he has a decent slider and changeup that he has improved the command of this season.  Ultimately, Hernandez profiles as a mid-rotation starter within an organization that has a considerable amount of near major league ready pitching depth.  Don’t be surprised if the O’s bring him along at some point this season, though it may be in the bullpen.

5/19 AAA Minor League Report

News flash!  Jake Fox did not hit a homerun last night…but he did go 2-4 with a stolen base.  Drew Stubbs hit his first HR of the season and drove in two while San Diego’s Chad Huffman blasted his 8th.  Alcides Escobar scored three times as did Colorado’s Eric Young Jr.  On the mound, Blake Hawksworth tossed 6.1 innings of one run ball for his 4th win and Jeff Samardzija looked solid over his 5 innings.

Today’s top prospect from the AAA ranks is New York Mets #1 prospect Fernando Martinez.  The 20 year old OF hit his 6th and 7th HR off of Clay Buchholz yesterday and now has hit four in his last six games.  Martinez had a solid off-season in the Dominican Winter League hitting .314 with 6 HR and 26 RBI, demonstrating that his power potential could start to be converted into actual production this season.  The Mets are set in their outfield right now with Carlos Beltran, Ryan Church, and Daniel Murphy but there is ample reason to believe that Martinez will get a chance to debut with the Mets during the final month of the season.  As predicted by several scouts, Martinez is turning into more of a power hitter than tools guy and the possibilities that abound from an outfield of Beltran, Murphy, Martinez should dazzle the fans at Citi Field for years to come.

5/17 AAA Minor League Report

Michael Bowden threw eight innings of shutout ball, striking out seven and allowing just three hits.  He’s been even better this year than last year allowing just four earned runs in his first 42 IP, mainly on the strength of a stingy .136 BAA.  The Red Sox have a plethora of good pitchers on the big league club right now, but there is ample reason that both he and Clay Buchholz will get another opportunity at some point this season.  Detroit Tigers OF prospect Wilkin Ramirez rapped three hits including is 5th HR and Kila Ka’aihue blasted his 7th.  One time top catching prospect Jeff Clement continues to break out of his horrible early season slump, collecting three more hits and driving in two runs.  Clement has been used primarily as a DH with recently promoted Adam Moore getting the bulk of the time behind the plate.

Today’s top performer is no stranger to the prospecting world.  Former 1st overall pick and 2008 post season hero David Price tossed five hitless innings fanning 9 hitters in a no decision.  Price has struggled with his control this season and has not resembled the pitcher that dazzled the baseball world this past October.  As a result, the final eBay values of Price’s first year cards have dropped to less than 50% of their peak values from this past fall.  The Rays currently have Jeff Niemann filling the #5 spot in their rotation, but he has struggled with his command all season making him the most likely candidate to be shuttled to the bullpen once Tampa is ready to recall Price.

5/16 AAA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on May 17, 2009 under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

I have a little window of time to give you the reports for Saturday’s games as I have been super busy with family festivities.  Saturday’s games saw Tommy Hanson continue his dominance of the International league as he threw seven two-hit innings of shutout ball striking out seven and earning his second win of the season.  Teammate and best friend Kris Medlen may be beating him to the Braves rotation, but rest assured that they will both be pitching there for the bulk of the 2009 season.  Brett Wallace looked exceptional in his AAA debut going 3-4 with two runs and an RBI.  His presence in Memphis’ lineup should help to improve the bats of both Jon Jay and Allen Craig.  As good as Wallace was, he was outshone by the sterling pitching performance of P.J. Walters who tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and striking out 9.  Jake Fox continues to put forth an MVP performance this season with a 3-4 day scoring two runs and raising his season average to .429.  On Friday night, Fox clubbed his 16th HR and, with his 46 RBI, he has continually pushed the envelope for another Cubbie callup.

Today’s top L.A. Angels prospect is 2B/SS Sean Rodriguez.  Sean-Rod went 5-5 with two HR, boosting his total to 14, and driving in 5 RBI.  He also scored three times.  The Angels are a team that is impending transition with several of their stars aging, therefore ushering in the need for a new era of talent.  Rodriguez, along with Brandon Wood seem to be in line to inherit roles with the big league club, but they have struggled to show that capability during their brief stints with the big club.  Both Wood and Rodriguez are still just 23 years old and have immense offensive potential that should be realized within the next season or two, either with the Angels or another big league club.

AAA Player of the Day—SEAN RODRIGUEZ

5/12 AAA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on May 13, 2009 under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

Monster performances abounded last night in the AAA ranks as several top prospects put up some big numbers.  Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies went 4-5, including his 4th HR, driving in 6 runs.  Sean Rodriguez hit HR numbers 10 and 11 with 5 RBI and Cubbies slugger Jake Fox also blasted his league leading 13th and 14th HR with 5 RBI and 3 runs scored.  Nolan Reimold got back into the HR column with his 9th to go along with 2 doubles and 2 RBI to help teammate Chris Tillman go to 4-0 on the season.  It’s not like Tillman really needed his assistance though, as he was able to shut out Buffalo through 6 innings while striking out 10.  Brian Bogusevic continued his torrid hitting by blasting his 3rd HR and driving in two.  The Astros former southpaw turned outfielder is hitting .484 over his last 10 games with 2 HR 9 RBI and 10 runs scored.

Today’s top prospect comes from the A’s system.  Vin Mazzaro tossed 8 innings of one-hit ball in relief of Santiago Casilla striking out 5 and not allowing any walks en route to his first win of the season.   Mazzaro was simply awesome during his ‘08 stint at AA Midland, going 12-3 with a 1.90 ERA and 36 BB/104 K in 137.1 IP.  He struggled after being promoted to AAA Sacramento last year but has pitched well during his second go around.  Excluding back to back rocky starts in his previous two outings, Mazzaro has allowed just 3 earned runs over 28 IP and has nearly doubled his GO/FO ratio to an impressive 2.68.  He has struck out 28 hitters in 37 innings this season as well.  The A’s seem to be content with the early returns from the dynamic duo of Trevor Cahill and Brett Anderson, which makes Mazzaro’s opportunities to crack Oakland’s rotation a little more difficult, but he should get a callup at some point this season.  Knowing the A’s’ penchant for tinkering with their rotation, there is a good chance that he’ll get to start some games.  Keep an eye on his next 3-5 starts, the outcomes of those may just dictate as to how soon Mazzaro gets the call.

AAA Player of the Day—VIN MAZZARO

5/6 AAA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on May 7, 2009 under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

We skipped a day of reports, but today we’ll get back into the swing of things starting with some of the AAA performances.  Marlins 2B prospect and former player of the day winner Chris Coghlan continued his torrid hitting by going 3-3 with his third HR in four games, six RBI, two doubles and two runs scored.  Coghlan has shaken off an early season slump to hit .556 in his last 10 games with 20 hits, 3 HR 16 RBI 5 SB and 12 runs scored.  Cardinals 3B prospect Allen Craig hit his third HR last night, giving the indication that his bat may also be starting to warm up.  On the mound, Michael Bowden pitched 6.2 quality innings allowing just an unearned run and Daniel Bard picked up his eighth save by striking out four of the five batters he faced.

Today’s top performance is really a toss up between two pitchers.  Atlanta Braves undersized righty Kris Medlen was simply dominant again last night surrendering just two hits over seven innings while striking out 10 en route to his fourth win and lowering his season ERA to 1.17.  He has clearly outpitched even his teammate Tommy Hanson this season and is making a strong case to be the first call up for the Braves when a rotation spot opens up.  Medlen’s stock has been consistently rising since his sterling performance in the Arizona Fall League this past November in which he earned a 2.14 ERA with 1 BB/25 K in just 22.1 innings.  Medlen was originally going to be developed as a closer, as his small stature (5-10 190 lb.) was thought to serve as a detriment to his overall stamina.  The Braves have altered their ideas, however, and Medlen has flourished.  His 94 MPH fastball and two plane slider are both MLB plus pitches and his changeup is a serviceable third pitch capable of generating outs.  Medlen is an excellent athlete with clean pitching mechanics and a closer’s demeanor on the mound.  His only cards to date can be found in the 2006 Bowman Chrome draft set and the market for them is quite low right now at just 40-75 cents each.

Colorado Rockies prospect Brandon Hynick tossed seven shutout innings and helped himself out at the plate by going 2-3 with his first HR of the season.  Hynick has struggled to replicate the exceptional 2007 season he had at High-A Modesto when he went 16-5 with a 2.52 ERA in the hitter friendly California League.  Hynick is a soft tosser whose offspeed stuff is a poor match for the thin air of Colorado.  His upside is as an end of the rotation starter, but more likely will be the case that he will become a spot starter and long relief guy at the major league level.

AAA Players of the Day—KRIS MEDLEN & BRANDON HYNICK

5/4 AAA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on May 5, 2009 under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

The AAA Report will likely get smaller and smaller as the season progresses simply for the fact that several of our brighter players at this level will be working their way onto big league clubs.  Last night, Matt LaPorta hit his first major league homerun–one of many that will leave the yard courtesy of his bat.  In the AAA ranks, Memphis 2B Jarrett Hoffpauir rapped four hits and scored twice, Salt Lake City OF Chris Pettit had two hits, driving in two and scoring twice, Joe Koshansky hit his fourth HR as did Tacoma’s Jeff Clement.

Today’s top prospect is another Tacoma Rainier, however, as Michael Saunders homered twice and drove in three runs.  Saunders missed most of the month of April, but is rapidly making up for lost time, gathering four HR and nine RBI in his first four games.   At 6-4 205 lb., the 22 year old Saunders has quite a bit of power projectibility left in his athletic frame and his speed is already above average.  He should spend most, if not all, the season at Tacoma with a possible September call-up being in the cards.  There is quite a bit to be excited about in this kid and he doesn’t have many first year cards available.  His 2007 Bowman Sterling is his most valuable card at this time, selling for $1.00-2.00 on eBay.  More popular refractor versions of his Bowman Chrome Draft cards can be had for as low as $2 each.  Saunders certainly won’t keep up his torrid pace, but there is ample reason to believe that he will have 20 HR and 20 SB by the time September 1 rolls around.

4/30 AAA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on May 1, 2009 under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

Nolan Reimold hit HR number seven last night and Alcides Escobar hit his second.  Mariners outfield prospect Michael Saunders came off of the DL and put one over the fence and Carlos Gonzalez had a huge day at the plate with five hits, including two triples, three runs and six runs batted in.

Today’s top prospect is none other than Tommy Hanson who surrendered three hits in six innings, striking out nine for what was, surprisingly, his first win of the season.  Hanson has pitched well enough (1.69 ERA 9 BB/39 K in 26.2 IP) to earn a promotion despite his 1-3 record, but the Braves seem to be more interested in keeping at Gwinnett until June 1st in an effort to keep his arbitration clock from starting.  However, first year starter Kenshin Kawakami has been bothered by shoulder soreness his last couple of starts and has struggled as a result.  This situation bears watching as Hanson may find himself to be first in line for a roster spot should Kawakami go on the DL.

4/12 AAA Minor League Report

I hope all of you had a blessed Easter weekend!  After taking a day off, let’s jump back into things with reports from the Sunday’s Internantional League action.  Michael Brantley, Juan Miranda, Jason Donald and Neil Walker continued to look like major league hitters and Nick Evans hit his first HR of the year.  On the mound, Phil Hughes and Clay Buchholz had so-so outings, but their future closers, Mark Melancon and Daniel Bard respectively, were completely dominant.  However, it was a non-prospect that took home top player honors as the Braves’ Charlie Morton tossed six one-hit innings striking out 12 in a winning effort.

3/9 Spring Training Report

Grand slams by Nick Evans and Chris Valaika powered their teams to victories, Jeff Niemann continues to pitch like a former 1st round pick should, tossing 4 scoreless innings, Travis Snider went deep again and Brett Gardner continues to try to prove to the masses that he is more than a speedster with his third long tripper this spring.  However, it was a former Bronx prospect that captured today’s award as Pittsburgh’s Jose Tabata was a perfect 3-3 with a couple of doubles and 4 runs driven in.
