I was looking through some of my past posts and saw that the scoreboard section of each entry is a little mushed together, making it difficult to discern the final scores of each game. I will try to do better going forward.

As for tonight’s action, the Phoenix Desert Dogs put up 17 runs tonight to provide us with a wealth of offensive performances to choose from. Grant Desme blasted two more homeruns to up his league leading total to five and Josh Bell increased his league leading batting average to .600 on the strenght of a four hit day that included his first AFL dinger, a double and three RBI. In other games, Jordan Danks went yard for the second consecutive day, Yonder Alonso and Colin Curtis hit their second HR’s of the fall and Daryl Jones homered, scored twice, walked three times and stole two more bases to increase his total to six on the young season.

We go back to the Desert Dogs for our top performer of the day. Baltimore Orioles 1B prospect and former 1st round pick Brandon Snyder belted HR’s number 2 and 3 earlier today, driving in seven runs and scoring three times. Those of you who have followed this blog for some time have heard me on several occasions laud the offensive potential of the 23 year old power hitter. Snyder’s ‘09 campaign got off to a rousing start as he batted .343 with 10 HR 45 RBI and 19 doubles in just 54 games at AA Bowie. A promotion to AAA Norfolk saw him struggle to maintain his batting average and power numbers (.248 2 HR 43 RBI 18 doubles in 73 games). The cool down performance at Norfolk diminished the market for his cards somewhat, making his various autos in 2005 Rookie Cup and various 2006 Bowman products nice bargain basement buys at $5-10 each.

The Orioles have some decisions to make in the off season as the club has clearly opted to shift to a more youth oriented lineup. Emerging stars like Adam Jones, Nick Markakis, Matt Wieters, Nolan Reimold and a plethora of pitching talent make Baltimore an exciting up and coming A.L. East powerhouse that could contend with the other beasts in the east within the next two to three seasons. Snyder’s torrid start to the ‘09 AFL season (.481 3 HR 12 RBI 10 runs) should increase the Orioles’ confidence in making him the front runner for the position in 2010. Former Indians prospect Michael Aubrey should factor into the competition as well, but Snyder’s power upside and youth gives him a decided upper hand. As much as I like Snyder, I do think he will struggle some in his first couple of months in a major league lineup. He has a history of starting slowly at new levels before taking off and putting up better numbers. Regardless, he’s a future 20-25 HR hitter who could drive in close to 100 runs in the middle of a young and talented Baltimore Orioles lineup. Once that happens, the days of $5 Bowman Chrome and Sterling autos will be a thing of the distant past.

Domonic Brown hit his second HR of the season while the potent middle of Phoenix’s lineup (Josh Bell, Brandon Snyder, and Grant Desme) continue to punish the ball with multi hit games. Brandon Erbe looked good in his AFL debut (2 IP 2K) and Reds OF prospect Chris Heisey hit his second HR.

Today’s top prospect is red hot Detroit Tigers 2B prospect Scott Sizemore. Already three HR’s into his season, Sizemore logged in with a 3-4 day at the plate with two doubles and four RBI. Sizemore now has a league leading 9 RBI and is hitting .375 through his first four games. The 24 year old infielder had a breakout season splitting time between AA Erie and AAA Toledo, hitting .308 with 17 HR 66 RBI 21 SB 88 runs and 39 doubles. Sizemore’s AFL season should factor greatly in shaping Detroit’s offseason plans when it comes to re-signing free agent Placido Polonco. Sizemore’s ability to step into the role would allow the Tigers to save $5-6 next season to allocate to other need areas. Sizemore has only one rookie card, an autograph in the 2007 Bowman Heritage set, to date. His hot start in the AFL has garnered some attention for the card as it currently sits at $7-9 and is only intermittently listed on eBay at this time.

Yesterday’s scoreboard was limited almost exclusively to the Eastern League so today’s breakdown may be a little thin. Carlos Santana came a homerun away from hitting for the cycle, driving in his 83rd and 84th runs of the season. Santana has hit full stride this season after a July that saw him hit .311 with 8 HR and 29 RBI. For the season, the Indians’ young receiver is hitting .288 with 20 HR 84 RBI 25 doubles and 74 runs scored. Like last year, the plate discipline continues to be one of Santana’s strong suits as his 71 BB/68 K has helped to push his OBP to .410 this year. Santana is a guy who can hit at the major league level right now and probably will do so very soon. The trade of Victor Martinez has opened the door wide open for Carlos and there is not much that either Kelly Shoppach or Lou Marson can do to hold him back. Currently, Santana’s 2008 Bowman Sterling autos sell for $22-25 each and his Razor Metal autos command about $9-12 each. Santana ranks amongst Matt Wieters and Buster Posey as one of baseball’s elite young catchers. If he can secure a spot in Cleveland’s opening day lineup next year, he should be one of the early AL ROY favorites.

Today’s top prospect is Florida Marlins top prospect Michael Stanton. Yesterday, Stanton hit his 24th HR on the season as part of a three hit, three RBI day. The 19 year old has struggled during the month of August hitting just .227 during his first 11 games. This isn’t too big of a surprise. The Marlins are moving him quickly through their system and the plate discipline has had trouble catching up. After posting promising BB/K numbers (28/45) at High-A, Stanton has not been able to replicate that success at the AA level as he has walked 21 times and has 72 strikeouts in 56 games. The power has carried forward though and I think the plate discipline will emerge as Stanton gathers more experience. The eBay market for Stanton’s various 2008 autos has remained solid throughout this season with his heavily traded Bowman Chrome autos selling at $32-35 each, but his Razor autos (#/1199) have slipped to single digits in value. I think that Stanton should stay in AA for the remainder of the season and will benefit greatly from playing in an offseason league. He’ll be just 20 years old on opening day next year and should start the season in AAA before earning a much heralded callup at some point next season. Watch to see if the market cools during the offseason and pounce on some of his autos.

Pardon my delay in getting this out. I have been dealing with a wicked ear infection over the past three days that has affected my use of anything brain-related. I have been following the trade deadline transactions with great intrigue and will continue to bring you analysis either on this site or the Cardboard Connection over the next couple of days.

Multi-player swaps between the Phillies/Indians and Mariners/Pirates gobbled up the headlines over the past 24 hours, but there were several smaller deals that have popped up during that time that should has some short and long term implications on the eBay baseball card market. Let’s knock them down one by one…

WEDNESDAY:

San Francisco aquires Pittsburgh Pirates 2B Freddy Sanchez for AA RHP Tim Alderson

On the surface, it seems that the Giants overpaid for the former All-Star second baseman. Alderson was ranked by Baseball America as San Francisco’s #4 overall prospect for 2009. After a solid start at High-A San Jose, the Giants promoted Alderson to AA Connecticut where he has compiled a 6-1 record with a 3.47 ERA in 13 starts. However, his last handful of starts have not been without struggle as he has allowed 17 earned runs on 36 hits in just 28 innings. Add that to the fact that the Giants’ rotation seems to be stacked for the long term with Lincecum, Cain, Zito, Bumgarner, and Jonathan Sanchez. That stockpile of talent, along with the emergence of Henry Sosa made Alderson expendible, but several, including this sportsfan, feel that the Giants could have gotten more in return for him. From a market perspective, Alderson’s move to Pittsburgh converts him from being a future mid-rotation starter to becoming the Pirates’ best pitching prospect. This should accelerate his path to the major leagues and, in turn, offer a potential bump in the values of his various 1st year cards. Currently, Alderson has autos in the 2007 Bowman Chrome Draft, Bowman Sterling and Donruss Elite Extra (#/719) sets that currently sell for $17-22 each right now. There is a lot to like about Alderson as a prospect. At 6-6 220 lb., he’s got projectible stuff and command that not many 20 year olds can match. However, he’s had his difficulties dominating hitters during his first couple of seasons in the same way that his former counterpart Madison Bumgarner has. In 99 innings this season, Alderson has a 17 BB/66 K ratio. In addition, hitters from both the California League and Eastern League have had a significant amount of success against him combining to hit .272. Alderson, like Bumgarner, is one of the youngest pitchers in the AA ranks right now and there’s reason to believe that some of his recent struggles could be attributed to a lack of experience over a decrease in stuff. He’ll likely stay in the minor leagues this season before challenging for a rotation spot next spring.

As for Sanchez, his consistent offensive production in Pittsburgh has gone largely unnoticed with collectors as the Pirates have been perennial cellar dwellers for much of his career. Now a member of the Giants and in the thick of a pennant chase, Sanchez’s 2002 autos are beginning to summon an increased amount of market appeal. Sanchez is not the focal piece of the Giants’ lineup, but his bat will fit nicely in the #2 spot of the order and he should contribute immediately. As the Giants go, so will the demand for Sanchez’s cards. Unless they make the World Series, though, I think the most pronounced bounce in value will come in the the first few days following this trade.

Ryan Garko traded to the San Francisco Giants for high class A LHP Scott Barnes

Again, the Giants surrendered a high potential power arm for a solid but not spectacular infield bat. Garko has put up decent numbers this year, hitting .280 with 11 HR and 39 RBI this season for the Indians. Like Sanchez, the fetch for Garko’s 2005 first year cards and various autos will depend largely upon his and the Giants fortunes down the stretch.

Scott Barnes is a 6-4 195 lb. lefty that has tamed the rampant bats of the California League this season to the tune of a 12-3 record and 2.85 ERA. What makes this even more impressive is the fact that Barnes is a flyball pitcher in a league that usually eats them alive. The key to Barnes’ succes? A 91-94 MPH fastball with wicked movement that has limited hitters to a .227 batting average. He also features a curveball with good bite and improving command. To date, the former St. John’s standout doesn’t have a first year card, but should in the near future.

Orioles trade LHP George Sherrill to the Dodgers for 3B Josh Bell and RHP Steven Johnson

This deal is all about the prospects. Sherrill is going to be a set-up man for the Dodgers and has no market value. From a baseball standpoint, the Dodgers have to shore up their bullpen depth with a quality veteran southpaw. As for the youngsters, Josh Bell has long been a favorite sleeper prospect of mine. He struggled through injuries last season and was shut down early to rehab his knee. He’s been nothing but healthy and productive this year, though, hitting .296 with 11 HR 52 RBI 30 doubles and 47 runs scored in 94 games. What’s more is that his BB/K ratio continues to get better and better. This season, Bell has walked 50 times while striking out 70. At 6-3 235 lb., and just 22 years old, there is a vast amount of power potential in the youngster’s game, as he possesses wicked bat speed from both sides of the plate, but there are also some concerns about his ability to stay at 3B for the long term. Bell has committed 17 errors this season and has a decent .929 fielding percentage. The organization has little definitive depth at the hot corner but features promising sluggers Brandon Snyder and Brandon Waring at 1B. Bell’s first year cards in the 2005 Bowman Chrome Draft set sell for less than $1 each and his first autographed cards in the 2008 Bowman Chrome set can still be had for $5-7.50 each. Bell’s probably a year away from being ready for major league competition, but with Melvin Mora’s contract option likely not being picked up, there is a chance that Bell competes for the third base job in spring training 2010. I know that I’ve said this before, but the Orioles are a season or two away from being a really good team.

Steven Johnson has had a nice bounce back at High-A Inland Empire this season going 8-4 with a 3.82 ERA and a 42 BB/102 K ratio in 97 innings. He continued to look sharp in two AA outings with Chatanooga going 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA and 15 K’s in just 10 innings of work. Johnson can get his fastball up to 92 MPH and also works with a fringy changeup and solid average curveball. He’s an extreme flyball pitcher who probably would benefit more by being in a more spacious ballpark than Camden Yards. At 21 years old, there’s some upside for Johnson as a back of the rotation starter, but the Orioles are an organization loaded with pitching talent which should spell “long reliever” as Johnson’s future role in an O’s uniform. The eBay market for Steven Johnson’s only cards, 2005 Bowman Draft and Chrome, is limited to the oft-overvalued eBay store items. There aren’t any deals to be had on his chromes which are frequently on sale for $1.00-1.50 each. Cheaper alternatives can be found on Beckett’s Marketplace or Sportsbuy.com where prices fall into the more appropriate 25-50 cent range.

Prior to the start of the ‘09 season, San Diego Padres 2B prospect Eric Sogard was very high on my sleepers list. Perhaps it was his excellent first season in the California League (.308 10 HR 87 RBI 92 runs 42 doubles) or the fact that he is a former ASU Sun Devil, but I couldn’t help but compare him to ‘08 AL MVP Dustin Pedroia. While the two share many similarities, style of play, body size and structure, plate discipline, etc., Sogard’s got a long way to go before those comparisons have any merit. The fact remains, however, that Eric Sogard is an intriguing MLB talent. After a slow month of May that saw him hit .212, he bounced back nicely during the month of June by hitting .314 with 21 runs scored and 11 RBI in 24 games. Sogard’s main competition for the 2B job with the Padres is the disappointing enigma known as Matt Antonelli. I believe that he will leapfrog him by this point next season, perhaps into a starting job with the Padres.

Madison Bumgarner remains the top left handed pitching prospect in all of baseball, but the hype for him has cooled a little bit since his promotion to Connecticut. Regardless, the former ‘07 1st rounder continues to tack up wins. His seven innings of four hit, shutout ball netted him his sixth AA win and ninth overall for the season. Bumgarner has allowed just one earned run over his last 19 innings, but the strikeout numbers have been down a little bit and his 19 BB/66 K in 74 innings is less impressive that last year’s Nintendo-like 21 BB/164 K’s in 141 innings. Also, it seems like Bumgarner’s workload has increased over his last two outings (8 IP and 7 IP respectively). Perhaps this is because the Giants are edging into playoff contention and the chances that Bumgarner will be called upon to pitch for San Fran in 2009 are waning. I believe that Bumgarner can hold his own against MLB hitters right now, but holding him back until 2010 may be the more prudent move. Watch the market for his cards. If it dips, jump on his stuff now. He’ll have a prominent role with the Giants in 2010.

Today’s top prospect is another southpaw, Baltimore Orioles top ‘08 draftee Brian Matusz. his seven shutout innings marked his third consecutive dominant start at Bowie where he’s gone 3-0 with a 0.49 ERA and 6 BB/21 K in 18.1 IP. Matusz has been flat out dominant this season going 7-2 with a 1.80 ERA in 14 starts this year. His 27 BB/96 K ratio in 85 IP is a fine indicator that he is commanding his mid-90’s heater well while keeping hitters honest with his slider and change. He profiles as a #2 or 3 starter for a Baltimore Orioles rotation that could soon rival that of the pennant winning O’s of 1979.

When evaluating prospects, I find that there is a blend of statistics and physical attributes that each possesses that tell a great deal about what to expect from them at higher levels. A hitter that struggles with plate discipline often finds his batting average and on base percentages suffers against more refined pitchers. Batters that hit for a good number of doubles and triples as youngsters(18 to 21 yrs old) tend to build strength as they mature and hit for more power. These along with several other characteristics often hold true, but every once and awhile a player pops up that defies my parameters of conventional wisdom, leaving me scratching my head.

Meet Johnny Whittleman.

The Texas Rangers’ young 3B prospect has an athletic build (6-2 195 lb.) and, at age 22, has the frame to build more strength as he matures. Whittleman was a personal favorite sleeper of mine after his successful 2007 season that saw him hit .262 with 17 HR 72 RBI and 34 doubles at two full season Class A stops. Formerly a 2nd round pick in the ‘05 draft, Whittleman shows a disciplined approach at the plate uncharacteristic of most prep to pro players. Last season at High-A Bakersfield, Whittleman drew 82 walks while striking out 113 times in 118 games. Despite a mediocre HR total of just seven and a batting average well below California League standards (.257), Whittleman smacked 38 doubles, leaving promise of power to come.

Fast forward to 2009 and you would find Mr. Whittleman’s numbers diminishing even further. His batting average sits at just .224 (boosted about 20 points after his 4-5 performance yesterday), though his on base percentage is more than 100 points higher, due to his fine 31 BB/42 K ratio. 16 two baggers puts him on pace for his third consecutive season of 30+ doubles but he hasn’t been able to log in with his first HR yet.

What do we make of this going forward? Prior to Michael Young’s five year extension with the Rangers, I would have been more enthusiastic about Whittleman. The Rangers, for all their organizational depth, are quite thin at 3B. The talent is still there for Whittleman to carve out a major league career, but there’s a great deal left for him to prove.

Today’s top prospect is Cincinnati Reds SS Zack Cozart. The former 2nd rounder smacked two homeruns and three RBI in the first game of a double header and then followed it up with a two hit, RBI showing in the nightcap. Cozart has been blistering hot during the month of June, batting .339 with 6 HR 10 RBI and 4 SB. A blue collar player through and through, Cozart skipped over High-A ball and has attacked AA pitching with aplomb, hitting .290 with 8 HR 35 RBI and 17 doubles. Ahead of Cozart is the sweet swinging Chris Valaika who just returned to Louisville’s lineup after missing a month with a broken hand. Valaika’s bat is more polished at this point than Cozart’s, but Zack is a better defensive shortstop. Given that he has already skipped a level this season, it would not be surprising to see the Reds keep him in AA for the duration of the regular season. Watch to see if Cincy places him in the Arizona Fall League this offseason. If so, there may be a good opportunity for Cozart to get a decent look by the Reds in spring training 2010.

Last ngiht’s AA action saw the debut of Florida Marlins elite prospect Michael Stanton. Touted by some to be the second coming of Dave Winfield, Stanton collected two hits in four AB and drove in two runs. His promotion to Jacksonville seems to be well-timed and I am most interested to see if he can continue to be disciplined at the plate. Prior to his promotion, Stanton had a solid 28 BB/45 K through his first 50 games. Could he make his big league debut this season? I think not, but a trip to the Arizona Fall League in the offseason could be the final bit of seasoning for Stanton before his big league debut.

In other action, Beau MIlls hit HR #5 and drove in two runs. He’s been a little bit of a disappointment in the early going, hitting .261 with 5 HR and 21 RBI for an offesively anemic Akron Aeros team, but his early returns from June have been solid (.381 HR 3 RBI 6 runs) and his big league bloodlines are reason to extend a bit of patienct to the 22 year old 1B prospect. Speaking of first basemen, Oakland A’s slugger Chris Carter blasted his 7th HR, drove in two runs, walked twice and stole his 7th base of the season. As predicted by me, Carter’s power has returned after hitting just one HR during the month of April. Even more encouraging is the fact that Carter’s pitch recognition and plate discipline has taken a step forward as his 34 BB/53 K ratio is a marked improvement from his 77 BB/156 K performance from a year ago.

Today’s top AA performer is New York Yankees right hander Zach McAllister who tossed 7.2 shutout innings, striking out six for his 5th victory of the season. The 21 year old McAllister has had an understatedly excellent season as a Yankee farm hand, going 5-2 with a 1.61 ERA and a very respectable 18 BB/48 K ratio through his first 61 innings. McAllister has allowed just one HR in his first 10 starts and has held hitters to a .220 BA. The former 2006 draft pick looks to be a mid-rotation workhorse with a four-seam fastball that approaches 95 MPH and a two-seamer with good sink that sits at 89-91 MPH. His slider and changeup are solid pitches that have made significant strides over the past season and it is on the strength of those offspeed offerings that McAllister has been able to vastly elevate his stock within the organization.

From a market perspective, McAllister’s optimal values will be realized if he is able to stay in pinstripes. However, as his stock increases, so does his value as a late season trading chip for a Yankees team that is in a heated pennant chase with the Boston Red Sox. Don’t be surprised if McAllister’s name starts to get floated around as a potential part of a trade deadline deal. While that would bode well for the 6-6 230 lb righty’s immediate baseball future, his best market gains would be realized if he can make his MLB debut in a Yankees uniform.

Yesterday was a day for top pitching prospects to strut their stuff in the AA ranks. BoSox import Junichi Tazawa tossed seven quality innings, allowing a couple of runs and earning his 6th victory. Baltimore Orioles lefty Jake Arrieta did even better by punching out nine and allowing two runs over 6.2 innings for his 5th win. San Fran’s Tim Alderson allowed two runs over eight innings but lost and Dodgers youngster Josh Lindblom outdueled Arizona’s Jarrod Parker for his third win.

As good as the pitching was yesterday, not every AA hitter’s bat was silenced. Philly’s Michael Taylor hit his 10th HR as did Cincy’s 3B prospect Juan Francisco. Cleveland Indians top prospect Carlos Santana hit his 8th and 9th dingers while driving in three, and the group of Brandon Allen, Todd Frazier, Josh Bell, and Quentin Berry each rapped three hits.

Top honors for the day go to Chicago White Sox OF prospect John Shelby Jr. The son of former Baltimore Orioles and L.A. Dodgers catalyst John “T-Bone” Shelby went 4-5 with his 5th HR and five RBI. “Treybone” got off to a somewhat slow start this year and struggled through the month of May, hitting just .200. However, he has looked like a 5-tool talent over the last 10 games, hitting .308 with 2 HR 10 RBI and 7 runs scored. Last season, Shelby hit .295 with 15 HR 80 RBI and 33 SB at High-A Winston-Salem. He also amassed over 35 doubles and 80 runs for the second consectuive season.

Critics of Shelby, point to his struggles with his plate discipline (22 BB/98 K in ‘08) as a potential pitfall to his progress as a prospect. However, he has made significant strides through the first two months, having already walked 21 times vs. just 31 K’s. An upward shift in his plate discipline could revive thoughts of Shelby being a bonafide top of the order hitter for the White Sox. He is already an excellent defensive centerfielder and his blend of power and speed is always intriguing.

The Sox have a pleasant dilemma, however, as ‘08 draftee Jordan Danks has looked spectacular as a CF candidate as well. The younger and more projectible Danks has bested Shelby’s numbers across the board this season and seems to be on a fast track to U.S. Cellular Field, perhaps by the end of this season.

What does this mean for Shelby? Perhaps a trade….as the Sox have already tried to make a move for more pitching by putting together a deal for Jake Peavy. Although that deal fell through, it did demonstrate that Sox GM Kenny Williams is holding fast to his reputation of being an aggressive wheeler and dealer. It could also mean nothing, as Danks has been mainly playing LF since his promotion to Birmingham. Jermaine Dye’s contract is set to expire and Danks has the arm strength and size to be an everyday rightfielder. Also, everyday leftfielder and frequent DL denizen Carlos Quentin seems to be a better fit as a DH once Jim Thome departs.

Center field in Chicago’s south side has been a morass of mediocrity since the days of Aaron Rowand, but both Shelby and Danks seem to be excellent candidates who can each provide solidarity to the position within the next season or so. I think that the next couple of months will tell us a great deal about the Sox plans for both Shelby and Danks going forward and each should have a much more definitive major league role once Spring Training 2010 rolls around.

If you like offense, and oh how us prospectors do, then the AA performances from yesterday will bring a smile to your face. Cleveland’s 1B prospect Beau Mills blasted two HR and drove in four runs yesterday, while Detroit farmhands Scott Sizemore and Brennan Boesch each hit their 9th HR’s of the young season. Desmond Jennings rapped three hits including his 6th dinger and Angels 1B prospect Mark Trumbo also hit his 6th while driving in four runs. San Diego Padres OF prospect Mike Baxter added four more hits, including his 3rd HR and 21st double en route to a 3 RBI day. Baxter now has 21 hits over his last 10 games (.538 BA) with 13 RBI and 12 runs scored. Baxter’s effort helped elite pitching prospect Mat Latos earn his 1st AA win, though he probably didn’t need the help. Latos allowed just one hit over seven scoreless innings, walking two and striking out seven. Latos is now 4-0 on the year and has allowed a stingy .059 BA since his promotion to San Antonio.

Today’s top prospect is Philadelphia Phillies OF Michael Taylor. The former Stanford slugger has been swinging a hot bat as of late, hitting .432 with 3 HR and 13 RBI over his last 10 games. Taylor’s day yesterday was probably his best outing of the season, as he went 5-6 with his 9th HR, six RBI and two runs scored. Taylor is a mythical blend of power, speed, and discipline that should make him the perfect offensive weapon at the next level. So far this season, the 6-6 250 lb. Taylor is batting .342 with 9 HR 37 RBI and 8 SB. He should earn a promotion to AAA soon with an outside shot of making his MLB debut in ‘09. There really is no rush Taylor along as the OF is pretty well set right now with the trifecta of Ibanez, Victorino, and Werth. As good as things right now in the green grasse of Citizen’s Bank Ballpark, the rapid development of Taylor and top prospect Dominic Brown promises an even rosier future.
