4/21 AA Minor League Report

Posted by Jeremy on April 22, 2009 under Minor League Ball today | Be the First to Comment

TEXAS LEAGUE

Jordan Walden and Kasey Kiker locked horns in a nice pitching duel and, while both of them pitched well, neither came away with a decision.  Collin DeLome hit his fifth HR of the season, Brett Wallace smacked a couple of hits and scored twice, and Oakland’s slugging 1B Chris Carter smacked two more RBI, while 2B Corey Wimberly nabbed four hits and scored two runs.  Today’s winner, however, is yesterday’s winner Springfield catcher Steven Hill.  The Cardinals backstop followed up yesterday’s virtuoso performance with a five hit barrage that included his fourth HR, three doubles and three runs scored.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE AND EASTERN LEAGUE

The Eastern League was ravished by rainouts once again so I will include data from their league with the performances from the Southern League.  Top of the order speedsters Gerardo Parra and Gorkys Hernandez had big days at the plate and Tyler Flowers and Greg Halman each belted HR’s.  Brett Omogrosso threw five shutout innings, striking out six, but he was outdone by Jacksonville’s lanky righthander Sean West who won his second game of the season allowing just one run in 5.1 innings while punching out eight.  Congrats Sean, you are the Southern League Player of the Day!

3/7 Spring Training Report

Posted by Jeremy on March 9, 2009 under Uncategorized | Be the First to Comment

I watched a little of the US vs. Canada game in the World Baseball Classic yesterday and was awe struck by the filfthy stuff that big right-hander Phillippe Aumont demonstrated.  He struggled a bit with his control early, but struck out David Wright and Curtis Granderson to get out of a bases loaded jam.  Around the major leagues, Brandon Wood continues to swing a hot bat, John Mayberry Jr. went deep for the third time this spring and Beau MIlls hit his second long ball.  The youngster of the day, however, went to Phillies southpaw J.A. Happ who was simply dominant in three innings surrendering two hits and striking out seven.

11/14 AFL Report

Posted by Jeremy on November 15, 2008 under Uncategorized | Be the First to Comment

One more week left in the AFL regular season and I will surely be sad to see it pass.  Last night’s action made it difficult to pick a player of the day as there were many fine performances, but none really stood out above the rest.  Jason Donald had another great game with 3 hits and a HR.  Phil Hughes had a dominant start but no decision.  Today’s Player of the Day award goes to Sean West of the Florida Marlins who shut out a potent Phoenix lineup over 5 innings for the win.

11/1 AFL Report

Surprise! The Rafters finally won a game.  After showering them with so much praise in my preview, they have limped to a miserable 5-17 start.  The Mesa Solar Sox, on the other hand, are now 16-6 thanks in large part to some key contributions from stellar prospects like Tommy Hanson, Logan Morrison, Jason Donald, Tyler Flowers and Scott Cousins.

Today’s AFL Player of the Day is another repeat offender.  Eric Young Jr. went 3-4 hitting his second grand slam of the fall with 3 runs scored and two stolen bases.  Congrats Eric!

AFL Rising Stars Showcase

Posted by Jeremy on October 26, 2008 under Uncategorized | Be the First to Comment

The Arizona Fall League had its all-star game last night with several of the top players in minor league baseball playing starring roles.  The National Rising Stars beat the American Rising Stars on a bases loaded walk to Cincinnati Reds star Drew Stubbs.  To me, none shone brighter than Atlanta Braves phenom Tommy Hanson.  Hanson threw the first three innings and after two early walks, he proceeded to strike out 7 of the next 9 hitters without surrendering a hit.  Here’s the rest of the breakdown…

 National Rising Stars  7

  • Julio Borbon—3-3 RBI

  • Beau Mills—2-3 2R

BUY/SELL Analysis

Won't be overlooked for long

Won't be overlooked for long

Yamaico Navarro was almost not included on Baseball America’s Top 30 Boston Red Sox prospects list.  The Red Sox have a treasure trove of highly talented SS prospects like Jed Lowrie, Oscar Tejeda, Will Middlebrooks, and Argenis Diaz.  Of all of them, though, Navarro is having the best offensive season.  Only 5-11 and 170 lb., Navarro has surprsing pop and great bat speed.  Navarro has caught fire in the month of August, hitting .417 with 40 hits 21 runs 2 HR and 15 RBI at Lancaster.  Navarro doesn’t always play with maximum effort and his plate discipline is inconsistent at times.  Navarro is one of the 2008 Bowman Chrome debutants and his regular chrome cards comand a price of 75 cents to $1.00 each.

Market Advice: The Red Sox have found something special in Jed Lowrie.  Fortunately for Navarro, he already has experience of playing 3B and his range, hands, and arm strength would make him a good one.  Right now, Navarro is making a strong case for future consideration by the Red Sox, but with Middlebrooks’ recent move to 3B, Navarro may find himself to be trade bait to another team.  Regardless of where he plays, the price of his cards are a great BUY right now considering the season he is having as a future Fenway fielder.

BUY/SELL Analysis

Mark Trumbo was an 18th round pick out of high school in the 2004 draft.  After a solid showing at rookie league Orem, Trumbo struggled in 2006 at Cedar Rapids hitting .220 with 13 HR and 59 RBI.  Last season, Trumbo repeated Low-A and improved to the tune of a .272 BA with 14 HR and 76 RBI.  Trumbo has stepped up his production at Rancho Cucamonga hitting .286 with 23 HR and 64 RBI.  In a system that finds itself severely lacking power hitting and 1B prospects, Trumbo has a veritable opportunity to progress quickly.  His 23BB/61K rate is not alarming, but Trumbo will need to take more bases on balls as he progresses.  2004 Donruss Elite Extra offers an autographed RC of Trumbo (#’ed to 1,321) which sells for $8-10 each.  His more popular ‘04 SP Prospect Auto (#’ed to 400) can be had for $15-18.

Market Advice: I don’t see Trumbo as being a star in the making, but as the Angels’ top 1st base prospect, now that Matt Sweeney is hurt, he will get a longer look by collectors.  Coupled with the imminent possibility that Trumbo will hit 30 HR’s by the season’s end, the ‘04 autos of Trumbo are a decent BUY at these prices, especially the SP Prospect autos (if you can find them).  It’s hard to diagnose whether or not Trumbo will continue to progress at higher levels, but if you are in possession of some of his cards now, SELL if and when he reaches 30 HR this year.
