3/28 Spring Training Report

Saturday’s spring training action saw some outstanding performances from several top prospects.  Kendry Morales and Erick Aybar both collected 4 hits (one of Morales’ cleared the fence).  Sean Doolittle, Chase Headley, Adam Jones, and Nelson Cruz all blasted HR’s as well.  On the mound, Max Scherzer pitched 5 innings of 4 hit ball en route to a win, then promptly went on the DL.  Edison Volquez threw 5 solid innings for a win and Ryan Perry continues to look like Detroit’s long awaited dominant closer, lowering his spring ERA to 0.93.  Today’s top youngster was none other than Andrew McCutchen who went 5-5 with his 2nd HR, 3 doubles, 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.  McCutchen raised his average to .308 and is increasingly looking like a Major League outfielder.

3/17 Spring Training Report

It seems like every time I look at at box score, Pablo Sandoval has two hits and an RBI.  Tuesday was no exception.  Aaron Cunnigham went yard for the first time this spring as did Atlanta Braves speedster Josh Anderson.  Jose Tabata continues to swing a hot bat and Jesus Guzman belted his third HR of the spring.  The top youngster of the day, though, was Braves SP Jair Jurrjens who tossed 6 shutout innings allowing just 4 hits and fanning 6 hitters en route to his first win of the spring.

3/3 Spring Training Report

Yesterday marked the first day that the teams from the World Baseball Classic were in action as many of them squared off against MLB teams.  The Bruce got loose yesterday with his first spring HR, Jason Heyward continued to make us prospectors salivate with his first HR of the year as well.  Tommy Hanson continued to shine surrendering an unearned run in 3 IP en route to his first victory of the year, but it was a former top draft pick that stole the stage yesterday as Jeff Niemann threw 3 innings of 2 hit ball striking out 5 and making a strong case to be considered for a rotation spot for the Rays.

2004 Donruss Elite Extra SETH SMITH Auto #/1065

Current eBay Price—$3.00-4.50

  • The window for Seth Smith’s success in Coors Field is small.  With the acquisition of Carlos Gonzalez and the progress of top prospect Dexter Fowler, the Rockies have all but cemented the future of their outfield for years to come.  That being said, it is no guarantee that either Gonzalez or Fowler will be ready by opening day and the departure of Matt Holliday has left a void in LF that should be filled by Smith.  Last season, Smith accumulated 108 AB’s with the Rockies hitting .259 with 4 HR and 15 RBI.  While this is quite below his minor league totals, he was able to maintain solid plate discipline and much of his struggles may be due to the fact that he was mainly used as a pinch hitter or late inning defensive replacement.  Given the opportunity to start, even in a platoon situation, Smith could, and should, hit .300 with 12-18 HR and 65-75 RBI.  Given the bargain basement prices of his first year autos and the fact that, at 26, Smith could be entering the prime of his career, this could be a card that approaches double digits in value by the end of spring.
